Things to do This President’s Day Weekend in L.A. [2-18-2022 to 2-21-2022]

How about the past week in L.A.! The Rams won the Super Bowl. Hail rained down on us. Outdoor mask mandates were lifted. And, oh yeah, President’s Day is this Monday, which means many of you reading this are due for a three day weekend. Here’s what’s on tap:

The next few days has lots to offer including the return of Frieze Los Angeles, The Felix Art Fair, Sounds of the L.A. at The Getty, a lunar new year fest in Alhambra, the Hollywood Curling Open House, an anniversary party at The Greyhound, and (if you’re willing to make the drive) Palm Springs Modernism Week. Things to Do

Frieze Los Angeles -> After a 2021 hiatus, the third edition of Frieze Los Angeles kicks off this Thursday with a four-day event taking place at a new location in Beverly Hills. Over 100 galleries will be participating, including L.A. locals Blum & Poe, Gagosian, The Box, and Château Shatto, plus a host of other participants from some 17 countries. Tickets start at $227 for Friday’s preview day, then $75 to $95 for weekend general admission. Get more info here.

The Felix Art Fair -> If Frieze is too up-market for your spending habits, consider the Felix Art Fair taking place at the Hollywood Roosevelt from Feb. 17-20. 60 participating contemporary galleries will exhibit works in the Roosevelt’s poolside cabana rooms and two floors in the hotel’s tower. You can get a three-day pass for $75, or pay $40-$45 for a day pass. More info here.

Getty Sounds of L.A. Series -> Live performance is back at the Getty starting this Saturday and Sunday with the 2022 debut of the Sounds of L.A. series. The season kicks off with a pair of concerts by L.A.’s own Nobuko Miyamoto, performing songs from her latest album with a focus on her experience as one of 120,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned during World War II. Events are free to attend, but you’ll need to make advance reservations for admission, and parking is not included. More info here.

Broken Hearts Circus -> If Valentine’s Day has left you feeling a little blue, head to Angel City Brewery’s Broken Hearts Circus on this post-Valentine’s Day Saturday (Feb. 19) for a free event featuring aerialists, stilt-walkers, contortionists, jugglers, tarot card readers, specialty slushies, beer flights and candy pairings. Hollywood Curling Open House -> Anyone watching the Winter Olympics caught the curling bug? Get hands-on training learning the basics of the sport, including delivery and sweeping, this Saturday at the Hollywood Curling Open House. No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. Tickets are $15. More info here.

Pickwick Vintage Show at ROW DTLA -> Explore 45 vendors and exhibitors from across California showcasing collections of vintage clothing, jewelry, and accessories, textiles, and more, all at ROW DTLA this Saturday. 10 a.m. tickets are $20, and the price drops to $10 starting for noon entry. Alhambra Lunar New Year Festival 2022 -> This Sunday, the city of Alhambra celebrates Lunar New Year with a street festival featuring special performances, lion dances, cooking demos, food vendors, and activities. Free admission. Runs 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. More info here.

Cinespia Drive-In at The Greek -> This Friday and Saturday you can catch a drive-in movie at the Greek Theatre put on by the folks at Cinespia. Friday’s slate features American Graffiti and Drop Dead Gorgeous, then on Saturday you can see Paper Moon or Mars Attacks!. Tickets are $45 for a vehicle, with a limit of four customers per car. Palm Springs Modernism Week -> If you’re up for a drive and you’re passionate about midcentury design, head to Palm Springs over the next few days to experience Modernism Week. Beginning Thursday, Feb 17, the 11-day affair returns with over 350 events highlighted by the Modernism Show & Sale. You can also check out local parties, and tours of iconic mid-century homes, neighborhoods, and architectural landmarks. Tickets for the sale run $30 per person, while costs vary for other ticketed events. You can see the entire schedule here, or learn more about Modernism Week here.

Tupac Shakur. Wake Me When I’m Free -> A new in-person experience based on the life and work of rapper Tupac Shakur is now open in DTLA. Organizers, who are working with the say-so of the Shakur estate, have stated that the experience “leverages technology, contemporary art, and never before seen artifacts from Tupac’s personal archives.” We haven’t seen photos of the experience yet, so if that sounds a bit vague, then take heed. But if you’re a huge Tupac fan, the it could be interesting. The pop-up experience at L.A. LIVE near the JW Marriott at the intersection of Georgia Street and Olympic Blvd. Tickets run upwards of $40 depending on if you go on “peak” or “off-peak” times. More info here.ch

Free Wings During The Greyhound’s 8th Anniversary Throwback Party -> This Friday The Greyhound in Highland Park will celebrate their 8th anniversary by throwing a party like it’s 2014. From noon to midnight stop by to enjoy DJ sets of throwback music, an expanded beer list and free wings (chicken or veggie) for all party-goers.

Dine Out Long Beach, Restaurant & Cocktail Week -> The 7th annual Dine Out Long Beach, Restaurant & Cocktail Week takes place February 18-28. Close to 50 restaurants will be participating this year. 

Garrison Brothers Distillery x McConnell’s Collaboration -> Garrison Brothers Distillery has teamed up with McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams to create a Garrison Bros. Whiskey & Pecan Pralines ice cream featuring the distillery’s small batch bourbon, Central Coast milk and cream, topped off with buttery, salt-roasted ‘n caramel-coated pecans. The exclusive ice cream flavor will launch online for nationwide shipping and in McConnell’s scoop shops on Friday Feb. 18.

Golden Hour at LOAM -> LOAM at Ace Hotel DTLA launches “Golden Hour” this week with drink and food specials every Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Diners can feast on $1.50 oysters, $5 deviled eggs, $6 sammies, $10 burgers, $10 specialty cocktails, $8 house wine and $6 draft beers.

Sunday Aperitivo Series at Grandmaster Recorders -> This weekend, newcomer Grandmaster Recorders rolls out a new weekly Aperitivo Party on Sundays (4 to 6 p.m.) featuring an exclusive menu from rotating guests chefs, bakers, sommeliers and bartenders. Kicking off the series is a dim sum party with Top Chef winner and Day Bird LA owner Mei Lin. The menu is available on a first come first served, walk in basis inside Grandmaster Recorders glitzy disco ball and brass hued lounge, Studio 71.

Ruinart “Food For Art Dinner” at Bar Restaurant -> In celebration of the return of Frieze L.A., Maison Ruinart and Bar Restaurant in Silver Lake will present a “Food For Art” pairing menu inspired by Los Angeles artist David Horovitz and his “Give Us Back Our Stars” interactive artwork. On display at the restaurant, the art installation will be experienced with an exclusive seafood focused three-course dinner curated by Chef Douglas Rankin. The menu is available February 17- 27. Tickets can be purchased through Resy for $85 per person and an optional $45 Ruinart Champagne pairing.

Toasty Time at Good Clean Fun -> Natural wine bar Good Clean Fun runs a daily Toasty Time every Tuesday through Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. Diners can take advantage of food specials and and wine specials like $2 oysters, $10 glasses of wine, $5 spritz, a giant pizza roll stuffed with mozzarella, pork sausage, pepperoni and spicy marinara for $7 and much more.

Looking Ahead to Next week….

Wine Dinner Series at Bourbon Steak Los Angeles -> Michael Mina’s modern steakhouse Bourbon Steak Los Angeles will introduce a new monthly wine dinner series spotlighting local and global purveyors in food and wine. Kicking off the series on Wednesday, February 23 is a night with Westholme Wagyu and Penfolds Winery. Tickets cost $175 per person and include a five course dinner with wine pairing.
