Things To Do For Saturday
Museums of the Arroyo Day -> Museums of the Arroyo (MOTA) Day returns with a day of cultural appreciation and free family fun centered in and the around the Arroyo Seco. Attendees can get free admission to six local museums and cultural sites: the Gamble House, Heritage Square Museum, The Los Angeles Police Museum, Lummis Home, and the Pasadena Museum of History. Runs noon to 5 p.m. More info here.
Signs of Life at Griffith Observatory -> Signs Of Life, opening this weekend the Griffith Observatory, is the first production to be created exclusively for the Samuel Oschin Planetarium more than a decade. The show positions itself as a detective story, helping viewers uncover what it takes and where we need to look to find life in the universe beyond our own planet. Personal note: We had a chance to preview Signs back in April, and thought it was fantastic. Remember that entry to Griffith Observatory is free, and tickets for shows in the planetarium start at $10 for adults. If you go, expect a crowd. More info here.
Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories -> Starting this Sunday, a new multimedia exhibition opens at LA Plaza Cocina, which is the nation’s first museum and teaching kitchen dedicated to Mexican food. Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories examines the importance of the abuela, or grandmother, in Mexican cuisine by showcasing the personal journeys of ten Indigenous, mestiza, Mexican-American, and Afro-Mexican women through a selection photographs, texts, recipes, and a documentary film. The exhibition runs Wednesday to Sunday through Sep. 4. Entry is free. More info here.
Seven More Things To Do in L.A. Today
- Jeffrey Deitch Gallery will host an all day opening for British artist, photographer, and filmmaker Nadia Lee Cohen and her first major solo exhibition in the United States, HELLO, My Name Is.
- Mount Wilson Observatory launches the 2022 season of its classical concert series this Sunday, hosted inside the historic 100-inch telescope dome.
- Two new exhibitions open at The Broad today, including Takashi Murakami’s first-ever solo show at the museum.
- The Getty 25 community festival series continues with day two in Lincoln Heights.
- The Natural History Museum’s annual Bug Fair highlights exotic insect collections, bug-inspired artwork and jewelry, bug-tastic crafts, live animal demos, and bug-related products such as honey and silk. Tickets are $7-$15 (depending on age).
- Check out over 200 antique and specialty sellers on Sunday at the Torrance Antique Street Faire. The fair also features an antique appraisal booth and live musical entertainment.
- Great Big Family Fun Day is a kid-friendly festival hosted by SoCal Moms on the grounds of The Autry Museum in Griffith Park. Tickets are $5-$10.
