Things To Do

Life Cycles Preview -> Contemporary Japanese artist Tanabe Chikuunsai IV opens a new exhibition at Japan House LA on July 28 called LIFE CYCLES: A Bamboo Exploration. Between now and July 23 visitors can stop by daily to see the artist and his team as they prepare a massive bamboo installation, which is created from 10,000 woven bamboo strips held together with tension. Moonlight Movies in Long Beach -> Moonlight Movies on the Beach continues this week with a screening of Dirty Dancing on Tuesday at Granada Beach and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on Thursday at Long Beach City College Liberal Arts Campus. Free to attend. More info here.

Summer Cinema in the Park -> The Grove celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and their celebrating in style with a special outdoor movie screening of Sweet Home Alabama on Tuesday. Tickets are $25 and include complimentary popcorn and refreshments, and meal-adds on are also available for purchase. Get more info here.

Winemaker Wednesdays at The Bowl -> If you’re headed to The Hollywood Bowl this Wednesday to see Dudamel and Paris Opera Ballet, make sure to hop over to Plaza Marketplace at the Box Office Plaza at 6 p.m. for a complimentary wine tasting with wine professional Maeve Decouvelaere of Kermit Lynch Wine Imports as part of the LA Phil’s ongoing Winemaker Wednesdays series.

Shakespeare in the Park -> This Wednesday to Sunday, ISC’s Shakespeare in the Park continues with performances of Francis Beaumont’s Knight of the Burning Pestle. Shows begin at 7 p.m. Free to attend, but advanced reservations are required. More info here.

Shakespeare By The Sea -> The 25th anniversary season of Shakespeare By The Sea continues with free performances at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach this Thursday and Friday. The series continues at select locations around L.A. and Orange Counties through August 6. More info here.

KCRW Summer Nights at the Hammer Museum -> KCRW Summer Nights pop up at The Hammer every Thursday in July. This week, catch Thee Sinseers plus live sets from KCRW DJs José Galván and Jason Kramer. Get more info and see the full schedule here.

Sunset Concerts at Skirball -> Skirblall Cultural Center kicks off a series of free sunset concerts this Thursday with a performance by Iranian American singer Mamak Khadem. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Concert starts at 8 p.m. Advanced reservation are now fully booked, but a limited number of walk-up tickets will be available. More info here.

Summer Nights Night Market -> Summer Nights Night Market returns to Skybar at Mondrian Los Angeles this Thursday. Stop by from 7-11 p.m. to shop summer essentials like sunglasses, hats, jewelry, swimwear and more. Guests can also take advantage of a beauty bar, tarot readings, Chickies Hot Chicken and cocktail specials. There is no entrance fee to enjoy the event but you have to be 21 and over to hang out on the West Hollywood rooftop. 

Can California Lead a New Reproductive Rights Movement? -> On Thursday, Zócalo Pubilc Square continues its live events programming by hosting a panel of healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss the push for reproductive justice in the State of California. Free to attend. Discussion starts at 7 p.m. at Mercado La Paloma. More info here.

Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles -> This weekend, the Levitt Pavilion summer concert series continues with a Lethal Amounts Summer Showcase on Friday, Grupo Soñador, Los Malditos, and La Junta Dj’s on Saturday, and a Bangladeshi Night on Sunday. Movies on The Roof -> My Valley Pass’s Movies on the Roof series continues this Friday and Saturday Westfield Fashion Square with screenings of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Back to the Future. Tickets are just $5, and proceeds for the event benefit  Hope Of The Valley rescue mission. KCRW Summer Nights at CAAM -> After stops at The Hammer and in Chinatown this month, KCRW’s signature summer series comes to the California African American Museum this Friday for an evening of live sets from KCRW DJs Novena Carmel and Francesca Harding plus after-hours gallery access, food trucks, a beer garden, and more. Arte para la gente -> Arte para la gente, The Collected Works of Margaret Garcia is the latest exhibition at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. This new retrospective features over 100 hundred works from the Boyle Heights-born Chicana artist, reflecting a career that goes back more than five decades. The exhibition opens this Friday, and will be on display through June 11, 2023. Garagiste Wine Festival -> This Friday and Saturday, catch the Garagiste Festival: Urban Exposure in Glendale. This will be L.A.’s only wine festival that exclusively features wines from commercial California ‘garagiste’ winemakers. The wines are poured by the winemakers or owners themselves at the festival offering a rare opportunity to meet the sources behind the wine. Ticket prices range from $79 to $149. More info here.

Salsa Night at Ivy Station -> This Friday, Ivy Station in Culver City hosts a free instructor-led Salsa lesson from 6 to 6:30 p.m. followed by live music until 8:15 p.m. All ages welcome, and a free 90-minute validated parking available in the garage. Get more info here.

Dining

Tail o’ the Pup Grand Opening! -> The historic 18-foot-long hot dog stand Tail o’ the Pup is slated for a Grand Opening on National Hot Dog Day (July 20.) Built in 1946, the iconic walk-up had long been a popular tourist attraction making appearances in countless movies and television shows. The reopening and relocation of the stand by the 1933 Group also comes with an expanded menu that includes corn dogs, a variety of fries, burgers, milkshakes and soft serve, and guests will find a number of Tail o’ the Pup creations from the past.  Of course you simply can’t leave without trying a hot dog.

Ayara Thai Moo Krata BBQ Event -> Westchester’s Ayara Thai is throwing a Moo Krata dinner this Thursday. A unique Thai dining experience, Moo Krata centers around a charcoal heated grill with a raised dome for grilling surrounded by a circular pot for cooking items in broth. As a mix between Korean BBQ and Chinese hot pot, the meal includes an impressive lineup of meat including wagyu ribeye and marinated kurobuta pork loin from Snake River Farm as well as a mix of vegetables, rice, noodles, dipping sauces and tasty broths (lemongrass, galangal, and makrut lime pork broth.) The experience ends with Thai shaved ice using Japanese Kuramoto Ice. Tickets cost $48 a person with seating available for 5 p.m. or 8 p.m.

etta Now Open for Lunch -> The Culver City restaurant is now open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch. On the menu are etta’s greatest hits, including the bubbling shrimp, focaccia and pizzas. New bites to try include a burger, crispy chicken Sandwich and a halloumi sandwich.
