Things To Do This Week

Pop-Up Magazine at Ace -> On Monday, the live multimedia experience returns with its fall issue on to The Ace Hotel Theatre with a special theme of “Love Stories.” Expect storytelling and spoken word presentations backed by illustration, animation, film, photography, and original music. Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos Altars -> Now through November 2, you can view over twenty Día de los Muertos altars installations at Grand Park, including contributions from Consuelo Flores, Self Help Graphics, Alain Norte, Beatriz de Alba Spears, Carolyn Castaño, Denise Esparza, and and The Latino Theater Company. Carved at Descanso Gardens -> Descanso Gardens’ latest version of the family-friendly Carved includes brand new UV light installations by Belgian artists Tom&Lien Dekyvere, alongside a hay maze, pumpkin house, and hundreds of carved pumpkins inside the Camellia Forest. Bob Baker Marionette Theater: 60 Years of Joy & Wonder -> Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale has a brand new retrospective that traces the six decade history of the iconic Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and features close to 100 artifacts, including hand-crafted marionettes, original concept art, archival photographs, an animatronic band, and more. Forest Lawn Museum is free to visit Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Joy & Wonder remains on view through March 19, 2023. More info here.

Día de los Muertos at El Pueblo -> In celebration of Día de los Muertos, the Olvera Street Plaza will be decorated with altars for the public to view along with nightly processions and theatrical performances, all starting this Tuesday and running through November 2. More info here.

Forget About Spaghetti Festival > Now through this Sunday, The Elysian Theater’s Forget About Spaghetti Festival celebrates the theater’s one-year anniversary with a slate of new, original works and multiple free secret shows. Guests can purchase individual show performances, or a festival pass for $49. Get more info here.

Lido Pimienta in Concert -> Colombian-born, Toronto-based, global beats trailblazer Lido Pimienta comes to USC’s Bovard Auditorium this Tuesday for a performance at 8 p.m. The event is free to attend, but reservations are required. Get more info here.

Yohichi Nishikawa at Nucleus Gallery -> Studio Ghibli sequence art director Yohichi Nishikawa has a new exhibition of landscape paintings on view at Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra, which remains on view through November 13. Nucleus is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

Solaire Culture -> Starting this Wednesday, Champagne house Veuve Clicquot brings their traveling Solaire Culture showcase to a 20,000 square-foot space in Beverly Hills. The pop-up includes archival objects and original artworks, which highlight the 250-year history of the brand. The exhibit is free to visit with RSVP, and runs daily through November 17. Drag Show at LA’s Haunted Hayride -> This Wednesday, the LA Haunted Hayride partners with Hulu for a special evening of drag featuring performances by Jackie Beat, Monét X Change, Lady Bunny and Manilla Luzon. The one-hour show starts at 8 p.m., and will be bookended by musical entertainment from Monte Revolta. Hayride GA tickets start at $39.99 per person. Get more info here.

Cemetery Lane -> Continuing this Wednesday, the victorian homes at Heritage Square Museum get a haunted makeover at this throw back trick-or-treat experience. Cemetery Lane features 13 themed trick-or-treat stops in all, and tickets are $27-$32 depending on time of entry. The haunt runs through October 31. More info here.

Bienvenido A La Twilight Zone -> This Thursday and Friday, Lucha VaVOOM returns to The Mayan Theater for a special two-night Halloween event featuring their inimitable blend of Mexican wrestling, burlesque dancers, aerialists, and comedians. GA tickets start at $45 per person. Get more info here.

Bob Baker Halloween Spook’tacular -> This Thursday, the Bob Baker Marionettes head to Old Pasadena’s One Colorado for an afternoon of Halloween fun featuring spooky creatures and friendly monsters, all in puppet form. The free event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Get more info here.

WhoHa-Halloween: A Comedy Festival of Horrors -> This Thursday at Ventura Blvd’s Whitefire Theatre, catch an evening of spooky short films and sketches created a talented roster of women directors and performers. The evening offers two blocks of entertainment, with tickets priced at $22 per block, or $35 to attend both. Costumes strongly encouraged! Get more info here.

Halloween Movie Nights at I|O Rooftop -> This Thursday, I|O Rooftop at The Godfrey Hollywood hosts a double feature Horror Movie Night from 7 p.m. to midnight, featuring showings of Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Reserve tickets through Tock, but keep in mind all parties must purchase two drinks or spend $40 on food to attend the screenings. Guests also receive complimentary popcorn. Get more info here.

Falling Out of Time at The Wallis -> Grammy-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov brings a musical interpretation of David Grossman’s novel, Falling Out of Time, to The Wallis for a special one-night event this Thursday. The concert features members of the internationally acclaimed Silkroad Ensemble, including violinist Johnny Gandelsman. Tickets run from $59-$125 per person. San Gabriel Fall Festival -> This Friday, the City of San Gabriel kicks off Halloween weekend with a family-friendly affair held at the Mission Playhouse Plaza. Expect trunk-or-treating, games, a costume contest, and a haunted zone at nearby Grapevine Arbor Park. Free to attend. Runs 5 to 9 p.m. More info here.

Trick-Or-Treat at Grand Central Market -> This Friday, Grand Central Market hosts a family-friendly trick-or-treating event featuring delicious treats, a live DJ, face painting, plus drink and dining specials. Runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Free to attend. Get more info here.

Halloween on the Boardwalk -> On Friday, the Redondo Beach Pier Association hosts a family friendly Halloween festival with DJ’d tunes, a costume contest, and trick-or-treat stations right on the boardwalk. Runs 5 to 8 p.m. Get more info here.

ESGVJCC Trunk or Treat –> This Friday, the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center hosts a family-friendly Halloween event in West Covina from 4 to 7 p.m. Expect trick or treating, crafts, games, mini movie screenings, a book fair, and food trucks. Halloween Cookie Kits at Café Gratitude -> With Halloween right around the corner all, Café Gratitude locations are offering spooky themed DIY Halloween Cookie Kits for $35. The kit includes nine pre-baked gluten-free cookies and organic pre-made icing. Reserve one online or stop by a Café Gratitude location to pick one up. 

Spooky High Tea & Highballs experience at Lilly Rose -> Throughout the month of October, Whimsical underground bar Lilly Rose offers a Spooky High Tea & Highballs service each Thursday through Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. For $60 per person, guests receive a full tea service with a Halloween twist that includes specialty bites like Duck Confit Rillettes in Phyllo, Fig with Prosciutto and Bourbon Spiced Apples with Vanilla Chantilly Cream. Add Highballs and tea-infused cocktails to experience for an additional price. Make reservations 24 hours in advance to secure a seating. 

Halloween Sundae at Sweet Rose Creamery -> Now through October 31, stop in for a new Halloween themed sundae at Brentwood’s Sweet Rose Creamery. The decadent treat is made with spiced pumpkin ice cream, brownie bites, hot fudge, pepitas, and whipped cream, then topped off with an adorable brownie black cat and marshmallow ghost.

Creepy Donuts at Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts -> Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts celebrates Halloween with four specialty donuts available now through October 31. Made with a raised donut base, Halloween flavors include Charlotte’s Web, The Mummy, Sugar Skull and Halloween Cumpleanos. 

Scary Movie Month at Melrose Rooftop Theatre -> All week long, Melrose Rooftop Theatre screens some of the most iconic scary films at their outdoor space above E.P. & L.P. in West Hollywood. Ticket options include general admission seating for $35 per person or a VIP package complete with a three-course dinner from E.P. Restaurant for $65 per person.
