Will rain continue over the next few days or are we due for a brief respite from atmospheric river currently pummeling much of California. Here’s hoping for a pleasant surprise to the weekend!

This January 6-8 in Los Angeles, check out The Last Improv at Dynasty Typewriter, Afro Bowie at Teragram, Lunar New Year at L.A. Zoo Lights, the Oshogatsu Family Festival at JANM, the Yoga Expo in Pasadena, new exhibitions at Thinkspace, and more.

Things To Do This Weekend

The Last Improv -> This Friday at Dynasty Typewriter, an A-list lineup of comedians perform skits based on the stories of a guest monologist who offers impromptu diatribes inspired by audience suggestion. Dan Black hosts, with special guests including Bobby Moynihan, Nicole Byer, Paul Scheer, Paul Welsh, Jon Gabrus, Mary Holland, and Rainn Wilson. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 the day-of. Top Golf Live at Dodger Stadium -> Starting this Thursday, Dodger Stadium transforms into a giant Top Golf space where guests will be able to hit golf balls off of the concourse level and onto the field aiming at various targets. Tickets for the experience range $110 to $140 depending on the day and spectator tickets just to watch cost $10. More info here.

Lunar New Year at L.A. Zoo Lights -> The L.A. Zoo’s holiday lights programming pivots toward Lunar New Year with special activities every Friday to Sunday from January 6-22. Celebrate the year of the rabbit with a glow-in-the-dark dragon dance parade, lion dance show, kung fu showcase and acrobatics, fan dancers, calligraphy, a Wall of Well Wishes, and a selection of food trucks. Tickets are $32 for children, or $39 for adults. More info here.

POP Presents Vivaldi Opera  -> To kick off 2023, Pacific Opera Project presents the U.S. premiere production of the rare Vivaldi opera, Ercole su’l Termodonte. The show takes place over three weekends in January, transforming The Highland Park Ebell Club into an 18th-century style Baroque opera house, complete with box seating. There will be 8 performances in all, beginning this Friday and Saturday. Tickets start as low as $20 for some seats. More info here.

Completely Different Late Show -> The Groundling’s signature evening of late-night improv comedy returns for 2023 starting with shows this Friday and Saturday, with Chris Eckert directing a group of Main Company performers. Tickets are $20. More info here.

Exhibitions Openings at Thinkspace (January 7) -> This Saturday, Thinkspace Projects kicks off 2023 with a slate of four new exhibitions, all debuting with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is free to attend and includes DJ-spun tunes, refreshments, and live painting. Yoga Expo -> The nation’s largest traveling yoga convention comes to the Pasadena Convention Center this Saturday with a one-day event featuring classes, panel discussions and a yoga marketplace.  A single all-day pass starts at $55 per person, and there is a three-ticket family pass at $99 for three tickets. ReStart YOU 2023 -> Get a head start your 2023 fitness and wellness goals with free outdoor classes and experiences at Ivy Station this Saturday. Activations include a CycleBar class, a yoga session with YogaSix, and boxing with Mayweather Boxing + Fitness. All events free to attend, but RSVP required to reserve a spot. Get more info here.

Beer Yoga at Trademark Brewing -> Prefer your Yoga is a post-workout ale or lager? Start your Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. session at Long Beach’s Trademark Brewing led by a certified yoga instructor, followed by a recovery beer. $15 to attend, with one beer included. Afro Bowie at Teragram -> a Sunday, Teragram Ballroom and Kentyah celebrate the legacy of David Bowie by pairing a funk-driven exploration of the Bowie catalog alongside a 3-D and VR immersive installation called The Cube. The talented lineup of performers includes Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Angelo Moore (Fishbone),Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Chris Dowd (Fishbone), and Tony Austin (Kamasi Washington) Tickets for the all-ages show are $32. Oshogatsu Family Festival -> Ring in the Year of the Rabbit this Sunday at the Japanese American National Museum’s annual Oshogatsu Family Festival. Admission to the festival is free, and visitors will enjoy cultural performances, crafts, live art, candy sculptures, kids activities, and mochitsuki a traditional rice pounding demonstration. Causeway at The Aero Theatre -> This Sunday, American Cinematheque hosts a free screening of the new Jennifer Lawrence film Causeway at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. Lawrence stars as a U.S. soldier who suffers a traumatic brain while deployed in Afghanistan and then struggles to adjust to daily life upon her return to the states. Screening starts at 7:30 p.m. and will include special guests TBD. Note that a RSVP does not guarantee a seat. Seats are allocated first come, first served. More info here.

Irv’s Burger x The Menu Collab -> Historic West Hollywood burger stand Irv’s Burgers and Searchlight Pictures are teaming up to offering the special burger based off of The Menu. Available for the month of January, sample a “Just a Well-Made Cheeseburger For You” made with Irv’s sesame bun, two 3 oz patties, American cheese, pickles, onions and special sauce, served with a side of crinkle cut fries ($9.95.) The cheeseburger is available at Irv’s Burgers, Postmates and UberEats. 

Wagyu Meatball Curry Pizza  -> Little Tokyo neighbors Prime Pizza and Champion’s Curry have teamed up for a limited release pizza drop on Monday, January 9. Available at Prime Pizza the Wagyu Meatball Curry Pizza comes with Champions Kanazawa style curry tomato sauce, mozzarella, wagyu meatballs, pickled shallots and chives, served with a side of curry dipping sauce.

Kebab Shop Now Open in El Segundo -> San Diego-based The Kebab Shop expands its footprint to the South Bay with a selection highly customizable wraps, plates, salads and bowls with sliced chicken and mixed beef and lamb doner, fire roasted kebabs and golden saffron rice.

Smorgasburg Debuts 10 New Vendors this Sunday -> This Sunday, Smorgasburg LA returns for its 2023 grand reopening featuring ten new vendors on offer. Expect fresh squeezed lemonades, sourdough pizzas to refreshing mariscos. A few standouts include:  

  • Cambodian-influenced chicken wing shop Shlap Muan will bring their unique and delicious wing creations from Long Beach to DTLA. Having recently sampled Shlap Muan, my top flavors are the Dirty Elvis, Sweet Spicy Garlic, and Cambodian Dirt.
  • Taiwan’s craft boba operation Odd One Out Tea is expanding to Los Angeles with a stint at Smorgasburg. OOOT takes a mixologists approach to tea drinks and items are paired with handmade toppings such as mochi balls and jellies.
  • Rad Na Silom, Thai Town’s late only night Pad Thai stand situated outside of Silom Market, is wok frying up noodles at Smorgasburg. On the menu are classics such as Pad Thai and Pad See Ew.
  • Organic, family run cinnamon bun company All About the Cinnamon offers 25 different variations on the sweet treat. Using locally sourced  ingredients from farmers markets, the company also offers vegan and gluten free options.
