Looks like another storm system is gliding through the Southland right now but that’s fine by us. There’s still plenty to-do to keep you active.

Things To Do This Week

Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai: Dust Child -> On Monday, the Library Foundation’s ALOUD series and Skylight Books co-present a talk from bestselling author and poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, who discusses her newest work, Dust Child, with Kenneth Nguyen (host of The Vietnamese podcast). The evening also features special performances by Quyen Ngo and Dr. Jason R. Nguyen. Free to attend. Starts at 7 p.m. a the Mark Taper Auditorium at Central Library. More info here.

Flamenco Vivo at Center For The Arts -> On of the U.S.’s most acclaimed flamenco and Spanish dance companies, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana comes to Pepperdine’s Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts this Tuesday with a riveting performance that explores Flamenco both as an art form and as a vessel of cultural heritage. College Night at The Getty Villa -> This Wednesday‘s College Night at the Getty Villa offers a free evening of art, music, food, DJ sets, digital sketch artists, pop-up performances, raffle prizes, scavenger hunts, photo booths, and more… all exclusively for college students. 18+ only. School ID required upon check-in, and advanced RSVP is required to attend. Runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. More info here.

The Moth: StorySLAM -> This Wednesday, The Moth brings an evening of live storytelling to Jam In The Van (3384 Motor Ave in Palms), with performers delighting audiences via tales of epic missteps, klutzy moments, and overall just being… clumsy. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17.50. More info here.

Goth Nite at Angel City Brewery -> Don your darkest garb and apply plenty of black eyeliner and nail polish for this Thursday’s Goth Nite at Angel City. Expect dark wave tunes from DJ Lori Lovesick plus discounts on ACB’s Devil’s Gate Adambier. Music starts at 8 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

The Comedy Basement -> On Thursday, Grand Central Market hosts an evening of stand-up in the lower level hosted by Jeff Rory Scovel. Performers include Aparna Nancherla, Solomon Georgio, Rachel Wolfson, Aisha Alfa, Opey Olagbaju, Jonathan Kite, Kristin Wallace, and Zach Holmes. Free/donation-based show. The Magic Flute AKA #Superflute -> For the second weekend in a row, Pacific Opera Project brings The Magic Flute AKA #Superflute to El Portal Theater in North Hollywood this Friday to Sunday. The production adapts Mozart’s The Magic Flute through the lens of 90’s video game characters, with Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Princess Peach taking on the roles of Papageno, Tamino, Queen of the Night, and others. Outfest Fusion Film Festival -> Starting this Friday, the annual Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC Film Festival returns with a week-plus of screenings, galas, networking events, and workshops at multiple venues throughout Los Angeles. North Hollywood Handmade Makers Market -> The Afterglow Makers Market returns to Lawless Brewery with Friday with a lineup of over 20 local artists and creative vendors offering vintage clothing, homemade jams, one of a kind artwork, coffee, desserts, and more. Free to attend. Runs 5 to 10 p.m. More info here.

FitspoLA at The Bloc -> This Friday, FitspoLA returns to The Bloc for a day of fitness-inspired activities and pop-ups where guests can try food and beverage samples, scope out training accessories and exercise equipment, and learn about the latest trends from top fitness and health brands. Sweet Rose Creamery $1 Scoop Day -> To celebrate the first day of spring, Sweet Rose Creamery’s Brentwood Country Mart and Santa Monica Main Street shops are offering $1 kids size scoops of any flavor on Monday. Flavors currently on offer include Fresh Mint Chip, Mango Sorbet and Banana with Caramel Ripple.  

YUM at Holy Basil -> Holy Basil in Downtown hosts a Thai market-style seafood night called YUM every Thursday through Saturday from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The menu includes classic seafood dishes found in stalls all over Southeast Asia like steamed local squid, curry crab, fried sturgeon filet, fresh oysters and more. Night market food pairs well with alcohol and lucky for you Holy Basil just launched a new sake and natural wine program. Reservations for YUM are required. To get in on the eats, send a DM through the @yumlosangeles Instagram and ask about the special of the week to pre-order something exclusive. 

Pizzana Now Open in Silver Lake -> The Eastside just gained another excellent pizza spot with Daniele Uditi’s Pizzana now up and running in Silver Lake. The local chain serves Neapolitan-inspired pies using Uditi’s signature fermented “slow dough” with faves such as the cacio e pepe and neo margherita, as well as exclusive specials only available at the new location like the puttanesca pizza with anchovy, cherry tomato, garlic, olive, caper, oregano and parsley pesto.⁣ Over the weekend they also launched an unlimited toppings menu and a cocktail menu crafted specifically for the Silver Lake neighborhood. 

Mexico City’s Rayo Cocktail Bar One Night Pop Up -> Thunderbolt LA hosts Mexico City’s Rayo at their Westlake cocktail bar this Wednesday, March 22. No reservations are necessary, simply stop by between 6 to 10 p.m. to experience Rayo’s cocktail program in partnership with Cuervo. The cocktail menu features the Carne en su Jugo Old Fashioned, Sweet Potato High Ball, Citric Tequila Highball, and a Jack Fruit Tom Collins. More info here
