If the social calendar is looking a little bare, fear not. This week’s list is bursting with fresh ideas.

From July 31 to August 4 in Los Angeles, you’ll find a benefit comedy show at Dynasty Typewriter, the final week of Shakespeare by the Sea, summer celebrations at CAAM and La Brea Tar Pits, 2001: A Space Odyssey at The Bowl, JazzPOP at The Hammer, Sizzling Summer Nights at The Autry, and MUCH more. Not For Hire: Live Comedy From Writers on StrikeM TP > As the SAG and WGA strikes carry on, a group of T.V. writers/comedians take to the stage this Monday at Dynasty Typewriter for an evening of stand-up to benefit The Union Solidarity Coalition. The lineup includes Brett Gelman (Stranger Things, Love) Naomi Ekperigin (Mythic Quest, Broad City), Will Miles (South Side Grown-ish), and Dylan Akira Adler (The Late Late Show with James Corden). Hosted and produced by Eliot Glazer (New Girl, Broad City). Tickets are $20. Starts at 7:30 p.m. More info here.

Aparna Nancherla: A Workshop Series -> Comedian Aparna Nancherla (Crashing, Corporate) is settling back into stand-up by workshopping new material at a series of performances coming to The Elysian Theater in Frogtown, starting this Thursday. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 the day-of. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. More info here.

Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft at JAPANHOUSEM FA > Now on view at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, culture collides with Japanese craftsmanship when POKÉMON X KOGEI | Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft. Beloved characters like Pikachu and Charizard are ingeniously integrated into literal works of art large from ceramic to textiles and metal work. Supervised by the National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa, Japan, with support from The Pokémon Company, the exhibition features over 70 works. Gotta see em all! Admission is free. Open seven days a week. City of San Gabriel 29th annual National Night OutFA > This Tuesday, The 29th annual National Night Out turns the historic Mission District into a block party with live music, food and games all in an effort to promote public safety. More info here.

First Wednesdays at AoP -> The Aquarium of the Pacific’s First Wednesday lecture series returns this week with a presentation The Four Seasons of Elephant Seals, led by Tim Bridwell, member and former president of Friends of the Elephant Seal. Per usual, the one-hour talk is to be followed by a meet-and-greet, cocktails, and music and crafts in in the Pacific Visions Art Gallery. Tickets are $5 if you buy in advance. Shakespeare By the Sea – FA > The 26th anniversary season of Shakespeare By the Sea wraps up this week after a summer of free performances at outdoor venues through Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Concluding the series, you can catch Hamlet at Don Knabe Community Regional Park on Wednesday, Twelfth Night at Soka University on Thursday, and closing performances at Point Fermin Park on Friday (Twelfth Night) and Saturday (Hamlet). All shows are free to attend, but donations are gladly accepted. More info here.

Summer Night CinemaFA > Summer Night Cinema at The Hammer celebrates 50 years of Hip Hop with several screenings in August. This Thursday, catch Bastards of the Party, a 2005 documentary about the roots of L.A. gangsta rap. All events feature gallery access, plus drinks and bar bites for purchase. Free to attend. 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Hollywood Bowl -> This Thursday, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey gets the the full Hollywood Bowl treatment with the score played live-to-screen by the LA Phil, conducted by Caleb Young. Sunset Series at South Coast Botanic Gardens -> This August, The South Coast Botanic Garden welcomes guests to their weekly after-hours series every Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Programming for each event includes multiple music sessions, yard games, food concessions, kid-friendly activities, and cocktails for the 21+ crowd. GA tickets start at $18 per person. Children 2 and under are free. More info here.

Sizzling Summer Nights at The Autry -> Every Thursday in August The Autry museum hosts some of L.A.’s best salsa and Latin fusion bands with free salsa lessons, access to the museum galleries and a separate children’s dance floor. Admission cost $20 per person. More info here.

JazzPOP at The HammerFA > A lineup of notables from the West Coast jazz scene are headed to The Hammer courtyard for three concerts this August as part of the museum’s JazzPOP series. The fun kicks off this Thursday with a performance by Hafez Modirzadeh Quartet. Free to attend. Starts at 8 p.m. More info here.

Sunset Concerts at SkirballFA > The annual free music series at Skirball Cultural Center continues this Thursday with a performance by Ethiopian fusion artist with AvevA. Admission is free, but remember parking runs $15-$20 depending on if you purchase in advance. More info here.

KCRW Summer Nights at CAAMM FA TP > This Friday, KCRW Summer Nights will double as the re-opening celebration for the California African American Museum, along with debut of several new exhibitions including A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration. Expect DJ’s, access to the gallery, food and drinks for purchase, plus plenty of dancing. Runs 7 to 11 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Summer Nights at the Tar PitsFA TP > This Friday, the La Brea Tar Pits will host a free summer celebration offering a range of cultural activities and activations. Guests of Summer Night at the Tar Pits will find free museum access from 5 to 8 p.m., a DJ Stage with tunes from Beat Junkie Institute of Sound and Ladies of Sound, pop-up presentations from museum educators, a special discussion on Ice Age saber-toothed cats, food trucks, beer and cocktails for purchase, and more. Rejuvenation Lab -> This Friday, experience a luxurious ‘Rejuvenation Lab’ at The Hoxton in Downtown Los Angeles. In collaboration with Luxury restwear brand Lunya, Therabody, Ourself, Perelel, and WTHN, guests will be treated to treatments like a custom Ourself Skincare facial with lip plump treatment, and a lymphatic massage paired with a Perelel Greens Drink. The Music Center’s Dance DTLAM FA > Free evening dance parties continue at The Music Center’s Jerry Moss Plaza every Friday throughout the summer. Dance instructors will be on hand to teach guests easy-to-follow steps, allowing everyone to get into the groove right from the jump. This week, catch an evening of Afro-Cuban Rumba & Cuban Rhythms with instruction from Kati Hernandez. Starts at 7 p.m. More info here.

Movies On The Roof -> My Valley Pass and Westfield Fashion Square are offering another season of outdoor film screenings featuring cozy bean bag seating, sweet views, and a lineup of new and classic films. Movies On The Roof runs every Friday and Saturday through the end of August, and tickets are $10, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit Hope Of The Valley. This weekend, catch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on Friday, then Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on Saturday. Get more info on the lineup here.

Zoo Friday Nights -> This Friday, the L.A. Zoo continues their summer series of weekly after-hours events, offering access the zoo grounds at the sunset hour while experiencing carousel rides, food delicious bites for purchase, beverages, DJ’d music, and a family dance party. Yi Cha Pop-Up at Melody -> Experience Chef Debbie Lee’s Korean gastropub fare at Yi Cha, a three-night pop-up event happening at Melody in East Hollywood, from July 31 to August 2. As the Executive Chef & Partner of the forthcoming restaurant Yi Cha, Chef Lee will offer a number of her mouthwatering dishes from oxtail tteokbokki to abalone sashimi in kimchi mignonette and renditions of items from her time as the runner-up on the show Morimoto’s Sushi Master. Lunetta’s Midsummer Dinner Menu -> Chef Raphael Lunetta is offering a new midsummer dinner menu inspired by his recent travels to Bali, the UK, and France. The menu features a variety of dishes, including Mushroom Rigatoni with white wine, thyme, roasted shiitake, and fresh black truffle. Meat enthusiasts can savor the Herb-Roasted Bone-In Filet with green garlic breadcrumb tomato and hand-cut Kennebec fries, while the Niman Ranch Pork Chop served on creamy polenta with Swiss chard and glazed nectarines offers another delicious option. More info here.

Eataly’s “Grigliata di Carne all’aperto” -> This Wednesday, August 2, Angelenos can experience an Italian al fresco grilling event during Eataly’s “Grigliata di Carne all’aperto.” Taking place at Terra, guests will feast on a a number of perfectly grilled meats and vegetables prepared simply on restaurants outdoor grill. Free Cookie at ROCA -> On National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day (August 4) Roman-style pizza spot ROCA in Palisades Village will give guests a free chocolate chip cookie made with Valrhona chocolate with the purchase of any pizza item from a single slice to full pan.  

Ginza Nishikawa x Interstellar Katsu Sando -> Celebrate Ginza Nishikawa’s one-year anniversary with an exclusive one-day Menchi Katsu Sando at Santa Monica’s Interstellar. The special sando features a grilled hamburger patty of ground beef, pork, and onions, topped with parmesan aioli and citrus cabbage on toasted Ginza Nishikawa shokupan. Available for pickup only at Interstellar on Tuesday, August 1, the sando cost $25. More info here
