Okay, let’s ease into the first weekend of 2024 with a breezy list of ideas to kickstart what we hope will be an amazing year.

From January 5 to 7 in Los Angeles, you’ll find a free Friday afternoon at Norton Simon Museum, a David Bowie Birthday Roller Disco, the Oshogatsu Festival in Little Tokyo, The Everybody Experience in Venice, Hand Habits at Central Library, and more.

Free First Friday Afternoon at Norton Simon MuseumFA TP > Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum offers free admission every first Friday of the month from 4 to 7 p.m. In addition to the museum’s permanent galleries, visitors can check two temporary exhibitions: Benevolent Beings: Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from South and Southeast Asia and Word as Image. First Fridays in Bixby KnollsFA > First Fridays along Atlantic Ave in Long Beach kicks off 2024 with a Jazzy affair featuring live music and/or DJ sets at over a dozen locations along the corridor, plus the monthly assortment of extended hours and special discounts at participating businesses,. I Love Micheladas First FridaysM > I Love Micheladas presents First Fridays at LA Plaza de Culturas y Artes. Happening from 7 p.m. to midnight Micheladas will be flowing all night, alongside food from Birria Los socios, Bella Luna Pizza and Shrimp & Taco Stop. Salinas de San Pedro Salt Marsh Open HouseFA >  On Saturday, head to Cabrillo Beach for a day exploring the wetlands. Managed and cared for by the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, this salt marsh hosts a diverse community of salt-tolerant plants, invertebrates, fish, and birds. Accompanied by CMA Educators and dedicated volunteers, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and explore the wonders of this unique habitat. Indie Pulse Ep. 1 -> This Saturday, celebrate the diverse Los Angeles indie music scene at the inaugural Indie Pulse Ep. 1. Taking place at the retro bar Daddy Diamonds in Hollywood, the night will showcase music from Joe Bulldozer, Auxline, Acid Rescues, and Maejoy. The venue also provides free arcade games. Pixies Past Dark: A Queer Featured Night MarketFA > On Saturday, pop over Boomtown Brewery for Pixies Past Dark, a monthly queer featured night market showcasing vintage treasures, jewelry, tattoos, piercings, tooth gems, and more. The event is pet-friendly and free to enter happening from 5-11 p.m. Beats will be provided by DJ D-JANE starting at 9 p.m. More info here.

Oshogatsu Festival in Little Tokyo M FA TP > This Sunday, celebrate the start of the new year with a Oshogatsu Festival in Little Tokyo, put together by the Japanese American National Museum. The family-friendly affair features traditional Japanese food, entertainment and special activities. The museum will also provide free admission all day. More info here.

Linda Sibio: Wall Street Guillotine  Gallery PerformanceFA > On Sunday, join artist Linda Sibio as she unveils her 60 minute solo performance piece, “Wall Street Guillotine” at Craft Contemporary. This exceptional performance extends the themes of her solo exhibition, “Economics of Suffering, Part IV,” drawing thought-provoking parallels between the torture methods of the Holy Wars of the Middle Ages and our present-day wealth disparity. The event is feee and open to the public; however, the performance is not suitable for individuals under 18, unless attended at the discretion of their parent/guardian. LA Made + Sid the Cat Present Hand HabitsM FA TP >This Sunday, the Los Angeles Public Library, in collaboration with concert promoter Sid the Cat, present singer and songwriter Hand Habits at Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. The performance starts at 2 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Yoga and Beer at Lawless Brewing -> The North Hollywood brewery will host a Sunday yoga and beer session. The one hour yoga class is suitable for all levels, led by instructor Emily Phillips, ticket cost $25 and covers both the yoga session and a beer afterward. BYO-yoga-mat. More info here.

Classical Sundays at SixM FA > Great Music LA’s Classical Sundays at Six pops up at St James Episcopal Church with a performance by the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra.. The show takes place at 6 p.m. and admission is free. More info here.

We’re wishing everyone a Happy New Year with some Happy Hour deals to try for 2024!

Jemma Happy Hour Menu -> The new Italian gem has recently introduced an apertivo hour, available daily from 3 to 5 p.m., and a digestivo late-night cocktails and food hour on Sunday to Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to close, and Friday to Saturday from 10:30 p.m. to close. The drink menu features $12 spritzes and $16 mini cocktail flights. For food options, there’s a variety, including full-portion items from the main menu with a discounted price. Among the offerings are eight pizzas priced at $18 each, including Chef Jackson Kalb’s signature green Frankie Pie. The Crispy Calamari, priced at $15 during this time, is particularly delightful. Happy Hour at Dear Jane’s -> Indulge in happy hour delights at Marina del Rey’s seafood haven, available at the restaurant’s bar Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sip on signature cocktails like the Fonda 75, a blend of tequila, grapefruit, lime, cucumber, mint, and Champagne, priced at $12. Social Hour at Mother Tongue -> Chef Fernando Darin’s health-conscious Hollywood rooftop eatery offers a social hour every day from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring $5 beers, $10 wines, and cocktails. Mother Tongue’s signature dips, including the Avocado Whip made with tarragon and spirulina, are available for $5 each during this time.
