There’s a Big Group Walk from DTLA to the Santa Monica Beach on The Saturday Before Thanksgiving

Who says nobody walks in L.A.?

For the 10th year in a row Mike and Maria of The Franklin Avenue Blog are marshaling a group of Angelenos to walk one of the great streets of Los Angeles in pursuit something all too rare in our city: The exploration of L.A. neighborhoods on foot.

They call it The Great Los Angeles Walk and for 2015 the group will be tackling Olympic Blvd, with a plan to take Olympic all the way from Downtown Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Beach starting at 9:00am on the morning of Saturday, November 21.

So how long is that exactly?

According to a Google Maps route, if you were to walk Olympic Blvd starting at LA Live all the way to the Santa Monica Pier, it’s about a 15-mile hike, taking about 5 hours. Right now that’s just an estimate, however, as the exactly starting point has not been chosen for this year’s walk (follow the official site for updates).

The mileage and pace are certainly both factors to consider before deciding if you’re up for it. In past years the walks have typically averaged around 17-19 miles. The pace is more leisurely stroll than determined hike (this is definitely not a race).

[UPDATE: The official press release for the event is live and the meeting spot will be at Clifton’s in DTLA. The total milage for the walk is supposed to be 16 miles]

The event is free for any and all to attend, but keep in mind lunch is not provided, so be sure to pack some food and water if you’re going to make the trek.

For additional questions about the event, I’d point you to his handy FAQ page that they’ve put together for past walks.

If you want to join in, make sure to visit greatlawalk.com for updates, and if you’re serious about doing the walk I’d also recommend RVSPing on the official Facebook event page, as that’ll help organizers estimate the amount of attendees and plan accordingly.

Enjoy!
