Make Metro Part of Your Weekend

Grand Performances -> The signature summer event series at California Plaza has a pair of activations to check out this weekend. First on Friday, catch an evening of spoken word performances celebrating the legacy of Pride hosted by award winning poet Jen Cheng. Then on Saturday, they’ll host the Cali Soul Jam with performances by Chicano Soul Revue, Kelly Finnigan, Andre Cruz & Chris Lujan, and more. Both events are free to attend, no RSVP needed. KCRW Summer Nights @ CAAMM FA TP > This Friday, KCRW Summer Nights takes over The California African American Museum for an after hours affair featuring live music, food trucks, a beer garden and access to the museum’s latests exhibits including solo exhibitions by Simone Leigh, Paula Wilson, and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, as well as historical looks at Black beach life and African Americans in rural California. Party starts at 7 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Outdoor Movies at the Skirball -> The Skirball’s annual outdoor movies series continues this Friday with a screening of the Where The Wild Things Are (2009). Keep in mind guests are invited to come early to view the latest Skirball exhibition Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak. Tickets start at $20. Parking is free. Doors open at 6 p.m., movie begins at 8:30 p.m. More info here.

Shakespeare By the SeaFA > The 27th anniversary season of Shakespeare By the Sea continues this week with Friday and Saturday performances of with a production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV at The Bandshell at Recreation Park in Long Beach . As in past year’s, all SBTS shows are free to attend, but donations are gladly accepted. Performances run at locations throughout L.A. and Orange County through Aug. 3. The Music Center’s Dance DTLA M FA > Free evening dance parties are back at The Music Center’s Jerry Moss Plaza. At Dance DTLA, instructors will be on hand to teach guests easy-to-follow steps, allowing everyone to get into the groove right from the jump. The 2024 series continues this Friday with an evening of Salsa. Always free to attend. Runs 7 to 11 p.m. More info here.

Friday Night Movie at Ovation Hollywood M FA > Ovation Hollywood’s monthly Friday Movie Nights series pops up this Friday with a screening of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Film begins at 7 p.m., and guests can arrive early to receive free popcorn and discounted treats from the TCL Chinese Theatre Concessions Stand. More info here

Friday Night Wine Tastings at Barnsdall ParkM > After a five-year hiatus, Friday night wine tasting events are back at the Barnsdall Art Park West Lawn. A $45 ticket gets you a flight of wine curated by Silverlake Wine, plus access to a rotation of food trucks, all supported by tunes from local DJs and sweet sunset views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Observatory. Community Movie Night at Debs ParkFA > On select Fridays through August, the Audobon Center at Debs Park is hosting free outdoor movies in the center courtyard. Each event is scheduled to run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. This week, catch a screening of The Book of Life. More info here.

BET Experience -> After a four-year hiatus, The BET Experience returns to Los Angeles with a five-day series featuring a free two-day Fan Festival (this Friday and Saturday) plus a lineup of ticketed concerts headlined by Cardi B at Crypto and The Roots Picnic at The Hollywood Bowl. Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles M FA > Free concerts at MacArthur Park continue this Saturday as Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles presents an evening of ska and latin rock with with performances from Inspector, La Pobreska, and Chencha Berrinches. Music starts at 7 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Kirbyvision at Corey HelfordFA TP > This Saturday, Corey Helford hosts an opening reception for Kirbyvision: A Tribute to Jack Kirby. The group exhibition celebrates the artwork and influence of American comic creator Jack Kirby, whose legendary contributions to the medium include co-creator of Captain America for Timely Comics (predecessor to Marvel), along with co-credits for Ant-Man, the Avengers, the Black Panther, and the Fantastic Four. Pier 360M FA > This two-day, all-ages, free festival hosted at the Santa Monica Pier features ocean sports competitions, interactive games, a beer garden and plenty of live music on both days. The festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (though some competitions start a bit ealier). Free to attend! More info here.

Pasadena POPS: Harlem Nights -> The Pasadena POPS kicks off their 2024 Rusnak Summer Concert series this Saturday with a performance of Harlem Nights at the LA County Arboretum. The concert celebrates the 125th birthday of Duke Ellington through a tribute to the music of 1920s New York and the movements that it inspired. Expect to hear symphonic versions of hits from Ellington, Gershwin, Louis Armstrong , Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and more. Tickets are $30. Culver City Pride 2024FA > This Saturday in Culver City is all about Pride! The festivities kick off with a 6-mile Pride Ride, departing from Syd Kronenthal Park at 4 p.m. Then at 6 p.m., Main Street in Downtown Culver City comes alive with a community celebration featuring music, speakers, drag performances, food, face painting, and more. The ride requires an RSVP, but the celebration is open to all. More info here.

Pirate Invasion in Long Beach -> The annual Pirate Invasion returns to Long Beach this Saturday and Sunday for two days of swashbuckling fun at Shoreline Aquatic Park. Expect plenty of pirate-themed entertainment including sword fights, a fire show, live rock bands, sea shanties, mermaids as well as vendors selling pirate booty from the seven seas. Kid-friendly activities include face painting, inflatables, games, and pirate goodies. Single day passes start at $20 for adults, $10 for kids. Starts at 11 a.m . both days. More info here.

Pawlympics 2024TP > We know the last time the Olympics were in Los Angeles, the L.A. Coliseum played a central role. Well, now the pets are taking over. This Sunday, the Pawlympics offers competitions, photo ops, mindful pet business shops, and plenty of chances to mingle with fellow dog lovers and their canine counterparts. GA tickets are $35. Monrovia Music FestFA > On Sunday, The 7th annual Monrovia Music Fest brings a day of family fun to Monrovia Library Park with live band performances, activities, food trucks, and an artisan market. Free to attend. Runs noon to 7 p.m. More info here.

Art Beyond the Glass -> After a two-year hiatus, Art Beyond the Glass returns for its 12th edition on Sunday at Catch One nightclub on Pico Blvd. More than 100 of LA’s top bartenders will make cocktails and showcase their artistic talents, with proceeds donated to Self Help Graphics & Art. Tickets for the event are $65 online, or $75 at the door (if available). The action starts at 3 p.m. Get more info here.

Katz Deli Pop Up -> New York’s iconic Katz’s Delicatessen will pop up at West Hollywood’s Bar Next Door for one day only on Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pastrami sandwiches will be available for delivery or pickup via the Postmates app. The sandwiches, served on rye with house-made mustard and pickles, are priced at $25 for a half and $45 for a full portion. Dine-in guests at Bar Next Door can enjoy a full cocktail menu crafted by Brynn Smith, along with a special combo featuring Coors Banquet lager and a dirty martini shot with vodka, pickle, olive, and pepperoncini brine for $16. Limited-edition baseball hats will also be available for $45, both for delivery and on-site. More info here.

Sandwiches are Back at Gwen -> Curtis Stone’s zero-waste butcher shop inside Gwen in Hollywood is bringing back sandwiches this week. Starting Thursday, the menu will include braised options like confit duck leg ragu, beef and mushroom, and chicken and leek, all served on sesame rolls. There’s also a cold option: the Gwen Cold Cuts, a simple sandwich with Stecca bread, house-made salami, butter, brie, arugula, and mustard. Sandwiches are priced between $16 and $18, but the first 50 people each day from Thursday to Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., will get a free sandwich. After the weekend launch, sandwiches will be available at the counter every week from Tuesday to Saturday. More info here

McConnell’s See’s Candies Ice Cream Collection ->  McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams and See’s Candies have joined forces to create four irresistible ice cream flavors for summer. Jeni’s Summer Flavors -> It’s prime ice cream season, and Jeni’s just launched their Hot Summer Spins collection. This lineup features a remix of four classic flavors and one returning fan favorite. Highlights include Burnt Orange Creamsicle, made with orange ice cream, vanilla custard, and burnt orange caramel, and the return of Double Dough, a chocolate chip cookie dough flavor swirled into a buttery brown sugar custard. All flavors are now available in scoops and pints.
