Make Metro Part of Your Weekend

KCRW Summer Nights at Union StationM FA > KCRW’s signature summer event series swing over to Union Station this Saturday for the second week in a row, featuring a live performance by LA-based band The South Hill Experiment, plus DJ sets from KCRW’s Raul Campos and SiLVA. Sloth Summer NightsFA TP > This Friday, the La Brea Tar Pits hosts a free evening activation celebrating the slow-moving giants of the ice age: The Sloths. Expect an up-close encounter with Sid the Sloth from Wildlife Learning Center, free access to the museum, on-site food trucks, an excavator tour of the fossil lab and current excavation site, pop-up educational presentations, and Slow Jams and Summer Anthems presented by Mike C. Music (cause ya know, sloths are slow). The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Free to attend with registration. More info here.

Dance DTLA at The Music CenterM FA > The Music Center’s Dance DTLA hosts an evening of Line Dance this Friday, with instructors will be on hand to teach guests easy-to-follow steps, allowing everyone to get into the groove right from the jump. Event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. Free as always to attend More info here.

Sunset Swim at Annenberg Community Beach House -> After a long (and hot) week, cool off with a Sunset Swim this Friday at the oceanside pool located on the historic former estate of actress Marion Davies. The adults-only session runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Registration is $10. More info here.

Movie Night at Ivy StationM FA > Ivy Station’s monthly night move night returns this Friday with a screening of The Sandlot. Free to attend as always. Expect complimentary popcorn plus a selection of movie candy for purchase from Motion Fli. Lawn seating opens at 7:15 p.m. The move starts at 8:15 p.m.. More info here.

KCON LA  – M > This Friday-Sunday, The traveling celebration of Korean music and culture comes to Crypto.com Arena and the L.A. Convention Center and the Gilbert Lindsey Plaza this July for a three-day weekend chock full of live performances, brands, celebrity meet-and-greets, and more. Tickets start at $150. Friday Night Wine Tastings at Barnsdall ParkM > After a five-year hiatus, Friday night wine tasting events are back at the Barnsdall Art Park West Lawn. A $45 ticket gets you a flight of wine curated by Silverlake Wine, plus access to a rotation of food trucks, all supported by tunes from local DJs and sweet sunset views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Observatory. Jazz at LACMA – FA > The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Friday Night Jazz series is back for a season of free weekly concerts at Smidt Welcome Plaza through November. This week: a performance by Bruns & Baché. Remember that LACMA is free to visit for L.A. County Residents (with I.D.) on weekdays after 3 p.m. Seating is first come, first serve. Grand PerformancesM FA > This year’s Grand Performances continues this weekend with a Friday night poetry show entitled LA Stories: Music is History with Mike the PoeT. Then on Saturday, catch a night of West African highlife music with Okwy Osadebe. Both events are free to attend, and start at 6 p.m. More info here.

Shakespeare in the ParkFA > The Independent Shakespeare Co. is once again bringing a summer of the Bard to Griffith Park, but unlike in past years, the 2024 season will focus on a single production. From July 10 to September 1, catch Wednesday-through-Sunday performances of As You Like It at ISC’s familiar space near the Old Zoo. The main show starts at 7 p.m., and you can catch a pre-show, immersive prologue at 6 p.m. Free to attend, but donations heartily encouraged. More info here.

Jazz at LACMA – FA > The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Friday Night Jazz series is back for a season of free weekly concerts at Smidt Welcome Plaza through November. Smoking Out The HUB -> Barbecue legend and James Beard Award-winner Kevin Bludso is bringing the heat to his hometown of Compton with two epic food events this week. First up, on Friday, July 26, is a VIP dinner featuring a star-studded lineup of celebrity chefs and pitmasters, presented by Hennessy, Kingsford, and Crowns & Hops. For $175, guests will enjoy a six course gourmet feast and gain general admission to the second event: the City vs. City BBQ Get Down on Saturday, July 27. The weekend BBQ festival boasts an impressive roster of renowned pit masters from across the county and special musical performances. Highlights include a fierce BBQ competition, chef demos by Rasheed Philips, “AB” Brown, Lido Grubby, Logan Sandoval, and Delilah Winder, and a performance by hip-hop legend Yo-Yo. Tickets for the BBQ fest are $25 for general admission and $125 for VIP access. More info here

LocalympicsFA > With the 2024 Olympic Games starting this weekend, the experiential creators at Something New are organizing a “Localympics” on Saturday where participants can engage in fun and playful olympics-inspired games, with teams organized by neighborhood. The event starts at 2 p.m. at Santa Monica Beach. You’ll need to RSVP (free to attend) to get the exact location. 21+ only. More info here.

LACMA Latin SoundsFA > LACMA’s Saturday evening outdoor concert series continues at Dorothy Collins Brown Amphitheater (just north of the La Brea Tar Pits Museum) in celebration of the exhibition Painting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and The Great Wall. This weekend features a performance by Vocalist, songwriter and producer Candi Sosa. Latin Sounds concerts are free to attend, and run 5 to 7 p.m. More info here.

Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles ConcertsM FA > The Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles concert series continues this Saturday at MacArthur Park with Wonder-Full: A Tribute to Stevie Wonder featuring DJ Spinna, DJ Monalisa, and MC Cognito.  Music starts at 7 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Long Beach Dragon Boat FestivalFA > On Saturday, the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival returns to Marine Stadium Long Beach for the largest dragon boat competition in California. National Day of the Cowboy & Cowgirl at The Autry -> This Saturday to celebrate National Day of the Cowboy & Cowgirl the Autry is extending its museum hours until 7:30 p.m. and guests of all ages can enjoy trick ropers, cowboy poetry, live music, country line dancing lessons, film screenings, and docent-led tours all day. Divercity Concerts at Pershing SquareM FA > This annual free concert series in the heart of DTLA is back with a pair of events this weekend. 2024 West Los Angeles Obon FestivalFA TP > The 2024 Obon Festival is back this weekend with a two-day event held at the WLA Buddhist Temple Obon in Sawtelle Japantown. Expect a range of dancing, live performances, food vendors, and Taiko drumming. Runs 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 to 9 p.m on Sunday. Free to attend. More info here.

Pinterest and Primal Kitchen Pop Up -> Pinterest and Primal Kitchen are bringing the buzz to The Original Farmers Market with a vibrant pop-up this Sunday, July 28. Step into the Colorful Kitchen Pop-Up and dive into the latest food and kitchen trends. From noon to 6 p.m., you can sample unique dip and snack pairings, all inspired by Pinterest trends and featuring Primal Kitchen’s beloved condiments made with wholesome ingredients. More info here

Swiss Fair Los Angeles -> A taste of Switzerland comes to SoCal this Sunday at the 2024 Swiss Fair Los Angeles in Whittier. Expect a range of culinary delights (think sausages, spätzle, sauerkraut, and tons of dairy-infused desserts) alongside musical performances and all-ages entertainment. Smorgasburg’s Ice Cream Alley -> Smorgasburg’s Ice Cream Alley runs every Sunday through Labor Day Weekend. This annual event features local and pop-up ice cream makers, along with unique collaborations and special creations by Smorgasburg LA regulars. New vendors this year include El Churro Panzon and Hielo Magico. Returning favorites include Sad Girl Creamery, Kinrose Creamery, Happy Ice, and 626 Hospitality Group, which will participate for the fourth consecutive year, offering chef-driven soft serve inspired by the flavors of the SGV.

Mr. T Restaurant and Pink’s Hot Dog Olympics Hotdog Menu -> Hollywood’s contemporary French restaurant Mr. T is teaming up with the legendary Pink’s Hot Dogs for a special Olympic menu. On Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can savor four French-inspired hot dogs made with Pink’s franks and buns. Unique toppings include Beef Bourguignon, béarnaise sauce with pickles, raclette cheese with aioli and chives, and Gruyere cheese with caramelized onions. Pair these gourmet dogs with classic French cocktails, available all weekend. The event is walk-in only, featuring a 75-inch TV showing Olympic events and a DJ spinning French tunes to set the mood. Each French Hot Dog is priced at $10.95, with additional costs for French fries and drinks. 

“Woon Express” Pop Up -> This Friday and Saturday, Woon is hosting a Chinese American menu takeover, offering a unique twist on the menu of a certain popular Chinese American fast food chain. Get ready for a fun spin on all the classics, including Orange Chicken, Honey Walnut Shrimp Roll, Kung Pao Bao, Beef Broccoli, Crab Rangoons, Beijing Beef Roll, Eggplant Tofu, and Apple Pie Egg Roll with Milk Tea Ice Cream by special guest Milk Cult.
