The Moth’s LA GrandSLAM Championshp – M > The Moth’s unique evening of live storytelling pops up at the Aratani Theatre at Japanese American Cultural & Community Center this Monday for a competition between 10 past StorySLAM winners, who will entertain audiences with tales built around the the theme “Fight of Flight.” Doors open at 7 p.m., event begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $42 including fees. Astronomy on Tap – M FA > Astronomy on Tap returns on Monday with a pair of scientific talks (helped along by trivia, live music, and beer) at Dog Haus Biergarten in Pasadena. For the October event, NASA Postdoctoral Fellow Albert Wandui discusses “Echoes of the Big Bang,” then Caltech Postdoctoral Fellow Anastasia Yanchilina offers a talk on the “Search for Biosignatures Across Space and Time.” Starts at 7:30 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-serve. Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch – > Culver City’s favorite pumpkin village is back offering plenty of family fun, including photo ops in front of giant pumpkin installations, a straw maze, a super slide, petting zoo, giant rocking horses, and pumpkin decorating sessions. Will the Real Young Voters Please Stand Up? – M FA > A panel of civically engaged Gen Zers and young millennials from across the political spectrum convene at Zócalo Public Square this Tuesday to assess political trends amongst the younger part of the electorate, and answer a key question: What do they really want from their candidates? Black Art: A Brockman Gallery Legacy – M FA > On Tuesday, PBS SoCal, the Los Angeles Public Library and LACMA co-present a free screening of the new ARTBOUND documentary Black Art: A Brockman Gallery Legacy at Central Library. The screening will be accompanied by a panel discussion featuring Brockman Gallery co-founder Dale Brockman Davis, artist Charles Dickson, and LACMA’s Naima Keith. Fall Exhibitions at The Skirball – FA > Last week, the Skirball Cultural Center opened three fall exhibitions headlined by the U.S. debut of the traveling exhibition, Diane von Furstenberg: Woman Before Fashion. Also now on view are On the National Language: The Poetry of America’s Endangered Tongues, and Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time, and Technology (part of the Getty’s PST ART initiative). New Exhibitions at Forest Lawn Museum – FA > This Wednesday, Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale for the opening reception and media preview of Narcissus Quagliata: Archetypes and Visions in Light and Memory and Motion: The Paintings of Hratchya Hayents. AFI Fest -> AFI Fest is back in Hollywood this Wednesday to Sunday with its annual 5-day extravaganza of cinema. This year’s lineup features 6 Red Carpet Premieres, 12 Special Screenings, 13 Luminaries selections, 15 Discovery films, 12 World Cinema selections, 14 Documentaries, and 7 U.S. premieres, including the world premiere of Music By John Williams to kick things off on day one. Boney Island at the Natural History Museum – M > Continuing this Wednesday to Friday, catch the return of Boney Island at the The Nature Gardens of Natural History Museum Los Angeles. Expect an array of glowing installations, spooky skeletons, and shadow puppetry interlaced with artistic performances, and real fossils from the museum’s collection. Plus, this year the attraction is folding in local food trucks and vendors, along with bar service guests who are 21+. Boney Island runs on select days throughout the month of October. The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor -> After a four-year hiatus, Dark Harbor is back at the iconic Queen Mary with terrifying characters, haunted mazes, live entertainment, ghostly experiences, sinister eats and secret speakeasies hidden inside and around Dark Harbor’s mazes and attractions.
