Posted by The Sixth Street Bride (or viaduct if you prefer) has left an indelible mark on the history of Los Angeles.
Built in 1932, it has since served our city as the longest crossing structure overlaying the L.A. River, in addition to being featured in over two dozen feature films and dozens of other television programs and music videos.

You could say, architecturally speaking, it’s one of our city’s biggest stars.
Now, with the bridge slowing being eaten away from the inside out by chemical reaction known as alkai silica reaction (ASR), the iconic landmark is set for demolition beginning today, February 4, 2016.
In tribute the great history of the bridge in cinema, video editor Vashi Nedomansky put together an excellent montage of Sixth Street Bridge appearances in the movies, from Repo Man to Grease to Terminator 2.
One of the things I’m happiest about in the above clip is that Nedomansky included To Live and Die in L.A., in my opinion one of the most underrated L.A centric films ever, that also happens to feature one of the best car chases of the 1980’s (or ever), and an ending that will absolutely knock your socks off.
Do yourself a favor and watch it.
In any case, I guess that’s besides the point…
I’m just glad that there are so many permanent examples of the bridge’s use in popular media for us to hold on to as we pay tribute to the old viaduct, and remember it for generations moving forward.
Hopefully Michael Maltzan’s replacement structure, scheduled to be completed sometime in 2019, will become just as iconic.
