Handmade Italian Subs
Welp, nothing incites the appetite quite like a giant ass picture of a meatball sub, right? East Side Market & Deli is one of my favorite lunch spots in the city, not only because of it’s close proximity to where I work on the north edge of DTLA, but because the tasty food, plentiful portions, and no-nonsense atmosphere. If you’re a fan of the hot-italian sub, you will be in absolute heaven.
So why East Side Deli?
I’ll give you four:

1. One of the best meatball subs in all of Los Angeles. Giant (like tennis ball sized) meatballs, that have that perfect meatball texture and consistency–not too mushy. Sauce is tasty, and the fresh roll soaks it up perfectly. Knife and fork may be required depending on size of mouth.
2. The D.A. Special, which includes sausage, meatball, roast beef and pastrami. This is for the food masochists who want to punish their stomach a bit.
3. Overall–generous portions, whether it’s the lasagna, a sub, or one of the cold sandwiches, you will not go away hungry.
4. The hot pepper / condiment bar. Load up on the spices to your heart’s content.
Quick Notes
Being so close to the police academy, you’ll see a pretty consistently strong law enforcement presence here. Nothing wrong with that, just probably not the restaurant where you want to be holding when you walk into (unless you’ve got your prescription).
Parking isn’t usually a problem (ample street parking in neighboring residential hood) but the place can get pretty crowded during peak lunch hours, though the line generally moves pretty fast.
During the summer you may want to consider which days you go, as there is no a/c inside this joint and if the heat is sweltering, and the tables are full, it can get pretty damn hot in here.
