Posted by The LA Opera’s costume shop is moving, and that can mean only one thing: It’s time to clean house!
As part of the relocation from their current home at 330 South Alameda Street in downtown, the LA Opera Costume shop will host an open-air sale this Saturday. It’s only the third time in the shop’s history that they’ve purged inventory like this, and it promises to be pretty spectacular.

This one-day-only event offers the chance to shop for over 1,000 costumes and accessories that have been amassed over the years including garb worn for performances of Aida, The Barber of Seville, The Birds, The Broken Jug, Cinderella, The Grand Duchess, Lucia di Lammermoor, Orfeo ed Euridice, The Queen of Spades, Salome, The Turk in Italy, The Turn of the Screw and Vanessa.
The variety of one-of-a-kind items being offered is impressive, including handcrafted hats, uniquely designed shoes, masks, theatrical jewelry, period wigs, gladiatorial armor and even slave cuffs! There will also be bolts of unusual fabrics and faux fur, as well as buttons, belts, floral hair pins, bustles and panniers. Basically, it’s the eccentric shopper’s dream!
Prices will range from $25 through $650 for complete costumes with individual costume pieces and accessories available from $2 to $20.
There will also be a special “Diva Rack” of signature costumes worn by superstars including Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Jennifer Larmore, Bryn Terfel and Deborah Voigt. Diva Rack items will be priced from $1,000 to $5,000.
The sale will take place in the Costume Shop’s parking lot at 330 South Alameda Street, Los Angeles, 90013 from 1030am to 4pm. Demand is expected to be high, so get there early if you want first crack at it! Paid parking is available in the Little Tokyo Galleria parking structure located at 333 South Alameda.
