Food Pick for the Week

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqECR7TAcqI/

This week’s pick by Christina Champlin, Co-Founder of We Like L.A.

Atrium is a stunner. Tucked inside a brick path way off Vermont Avenue, string lights zig zag above the narrow courtyard leading into the restaurant. Once inside you’ll be escorted to a pink velvet booth or table, either providing a view to the glass-enclosed show kitchen and illuminated half-moon bar. On the menu you’ll find a commixture of ethnic flavors inspired by Los Angeles’ eclectic cultural landscape. Beef Carpaccio is modified to resemble carne asada fries topped with avocado crema, salsa and thin crunchy potato sticks. Pork chops are prepared Japanese Katsu style and steaks are accompanied with Szechuan au poivre sauce. This is not fusion food. This is L.A. food culture carefully executed by a five star culinary team that includes Executive Chef-Partner Hunter Pritchett (Melody, Son of a Gun, Waterloo & City), Beverage Director Jordan Young (Kettle Black, Sawyer) and General Manager Cameron Dodge White (Little Dom’s). On the sweets spectrum Pastry Chef-Partner Gregory Baumgartner (71 Above, E.P. & L.P.) has dreamed up an ambitious menu. You will marvel at the Avocado Mousse decorated with edible basil flowers before snapping a picture for your Instagram. The mousse lays on top of layers of sorbet, granita, cake, puffed rice and coconut foam each with its own distinct texture and sensation. This is not so much dessert as it is a conversation piece. You can’t help but dissect every little ingredient you’re spooning into your mouth. If avocado is not your thing, another stand out is the Lemongrass Custard paired with sweet tangy passion fruit gelee topped with candied cashews. It is a sweeter choice than the aforementioned mousse, but it stands out in its own right. If you have the chance, get both.

Atrium is located at 1816 1/2 N. Vermont Ave. in Los Angeles, CA 90027
