The Hammer Museum is, for our money, one of the undisputed (and oft underrated) gems of Los Angeles. The UCLA-affiliated institution boasts an ample collection of European and American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper (with lots of 19th century French works) and features an ever-changing array of cutting edge, contemporary exhibitions. A 2023 renovation added over 40,000 square feet to the museum’s footprint, and the total exhibition space now tops 26,000 square feet. So no, it’s not small. And it’s always free to visit.
Just as important as the art, ongoing cultural programming supports The Hammer’s educational mission through everything from curated talks to interactive family days, musical performances, art labs for kids, and film screenings at the Billy Wilder Theater. Of note happening right now is the Turiya Rising series, which brings live musical performers into the gallery space of the current exhibition Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal. It happens on Sundays at 5 p.m. through April 20, which is why we’re mentioning it today. However, even if you stumble upon this post in the months to come, be sure to check The Hammer calendar often because they always have something new and interesting on deck.
