Since opening in 1981, the California African American Museum has preserved the art and culture of African Americans with a special emphasis on California and the western United States. The museum, located in the heart of Exposition in Park, hosts groundbreaking contemporary exhibitions alongside permanent collections that include academic and naturalistic landscape paintings of the nineteenth century, works from the Harlem Renaissance, plus a range of traditional African art and contemporary art from the African diaspora, and a research library which contains more than 20,000 books, periodicals and records.

CAAM also distinguishes itself with an array of free cultural programming, from monthly yoga sessions and expert talks to dance parties, live music, and film screenings. Our post today serves as a reminder about tonight’s (Wednesday, March 25) special film screening/discussion of Finding Edna Lewis, which explores the life of the trailblazing Black chef who smashed stereotypes about Southern food while introducing America to seasonal seasonal cooking. The event begins at 7 p.m., and food anthropologist Deb Freeman and Eater LA reporter Mona Holmes will facilitate the post screening discussion. If you can’t make it be sure to check the museum’s website for more upcoming programming.
