There’s a saying that goes “It’s not where you are, it’s who you’re with.” Mostly true? Sure. But let’s be honest, a little window dressing never hurt. And there may be no place in Los Angeles County easier on the eyes than the coastal scenery of Santa Monica. Variety of attractions? Check. Perfect weather? Yup. Pacific Ocean views? You know it.

But maybe you’re thinking that SaMo is also synonymous with big spend. But that doesn’t have to be true, either. Below we’ve outlined five great day date combos, all (relatively) easy on the wallet, but not on the experience. None of them are bank breakers, but they are (hopefully) date makers. So let’s see what awaits us on the west side.

Bergamot Station + Birdie G’s

Bergamot Station is the largest art gallery complex on the west coast, which makes this a great date spot for art enthusiasts. And let’s not forget, it’s free to visit. The selection of galleries allow you to explore a variety of mediums from sculptures, to photography and paintings. Walking around will undoubtedly work up an appetite, and Birdie G’s is just the place for a happy hour session. Stop into Birdie G’s gorgeous lounge, the “Bird’s Nest” between 5 to 6 p.m. for Corned Beef Rueben Fries and specialty cocktails, wine and beer all priced between $4-$12. If you choose to drive, parking is free inside the complex. And if you’re going car free, you can take Metro’s E Line to the 26th St / Bergamot Station, which is adjacent right on the Arts Center campus.

Downtown Farmers Market + Yagul Cafe

The Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market (open Wednesday and Saturday) has long been heralded as a favorite among L.A. County chefs, and with good reason. The colorful bounty of fruits and veggies found here attracts sizable crowds, but that vibrant aspect also make it a low-key great midday date option. Afer a perusal of the vendors, you can swing a few blocks over to Yagul Cafe to grab some homestyle Oaxacan fare. Of course, there’s always a chance you’ll get inspired by the market produce and decide to make a meal together at home. Either way, you can’t lose!

Dogtown Coffee To-Go + Palisades Park

The Dogtown Coffee location tucked away inside the Fairmont Miramar makes for a ritzy rendezvous point inside one of Santa Monica’s best bluff side hotels. After you collect your brews, you and your date can cross one street over to Palisades Park to soak up the views of the pier and the coastline as you sip, chat, and hopefully connect.

A Historic Sandwich and Santa Monica History

Bay Cities Deli is a Santa Monica institution that’s been feeding locals for close to a century. It’s hard to go wrong with any of their deli fresh sandwiches, but the signature Godmother (prosciutto, ham, capi cola, mortadella, genoa salami and provolone cheese) is a standout for just $12. After a tasty lunch, wind your way over to the Santa Monica History Museum (open Thursday to Sunday) to dive deeper into local lore and check out the museum’s collection of rare photographs and memorabilia. Admission is just $5, and it’s free to visit every first Sunday.

Lemonade and a Beach Path Stroll

If a date with an ocean view is on your list, how about starting with an icy lemonade from the original Hot Dog on a Stick stand, located in the shadow of the Santa Monica Pier. From this central point, you’ve got options. There’s the Heal the Bay Aquarium ($10 for adults) or Pacific Park (no admission, but you pay for rides) on the Pier. Or you could simply head south along Ocean Front Walk, check out the Original Muscle Beach and enjoy the coastal breeze (100% free). Or if you’re in a two-wheel mood, you can swing over to Perry’s Beach Café + Bike Rental ($10 for an hour per bike) to grab a couple of  beach cruisers for a leisurely ride. No matter what you decide, the seaside vibes will lead the way!
