Students of Los Angeles history know that before we became the city of the car, locals at the turn of the 20th century relied on one of the most intricate and expansive public transit systems in the world. By the beginning of the 1960s the last remnants of that system were being decommissioned, replaced in prominence by buses and freeways. But there are a few place still around town where you can glimpse remnants of our retro rail system.

Located at the northern edge of Griffith Park, Travel Town is Museum is one such place. Here you’ll find a space dedicated to preserving and celebrating the railroad heritage of the western United States–its history and its artifacts. Visitors can check out a one-of-a-kind collection of freight cars and locomotives, passenger trolleys and interurbans, including the famed Pacific Electric Red Car that offered service stretching from Santa Monica to San Bernardino. You can inspect and climb into the rail cars to get an up-close view, and there is also a small indoor gallery with some historical exhibits and a miniature train that does a couple of laps around the 9-acre complex. Admission to the museum is always free, but a ticket on the mini train costs $4 for adults or $3 for kids 11 and under.
