Beginning this February, the Los Angeles Philharmonic explores the cult status of Gustav Mahler among Angeleno symphonic with a rapturous series of the composer’s monumental music and his inner world through the Mahler Grooves Festival. The series kicks off with Gustavo Dudamel conducting Mahler’s Journey on Feb. 20-23, focusing in on two excerpts from Mahler’s First and Tenth symphonies that frame the composer’s life. The opening weekend program features Blumine, the second movement from Symphony No. 1, as well The Adagio from Symphony No. 10.

As the festival continues, Dudamel steps to the stage again to conduct Mahler’s Seventh (Feb. 27 – Mar. 1) and Mahler’s Fifth (Mar. 6-9). Concert dates will also be interspersed with special community programming that includes a Mahler Grooves Listening Party at Paramour Estate on Feb. 19 along with a day-long Mahlerthon on March 2. The latter is a two-part event at Walt Disney Concert Hall featuring performances by YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, musicians from Santa Monica High School, the UCLA Philharmonia, the USC Thornton Symphony, and the Colburn Orchestra.
