25 Totally Fun Things To Do in L.A. This Week [3-2-15 to 3-6-15]

Every week in Los Angeles there’s tons of great things to do (even before the weekend gets started) that we think you ought to have on your radar. With that in mind, we put together a list every Monday morning to keep you in the know about what’s happening in the city you love.

This week includes an Odd Market in Eagle Rock, free pancakes at IHOP, free comedy shows, and First Fridays happening all over the city (plus a whole lot more!).

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

1. Last Chance See The Exhibit Of Hollywood Costumes One Last Time 

This showcasing of iconic collections of film artifacts is coming to a close. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are presenting the final showing of the groundbreaking multimedia exhibition “Hollywood Costume” at the Wilshire May Company. 2. Hot Tub With Kurt An Kristen

After their show became a hit in Brooklyn, New York comedians Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal took their show to the west coast. Hot Tub With Kurt And Kristen is a weekly variety show happening at The Virgil. You might recognize Kurt from Chelsea Lately and Kristen from The Daily Show and Flight of the Concords. Laugh your ass off for just $5 bucks or $8 at the door. Get your advance tickets here.

3. Odd Market Eagle Rock Kicks Off

Eagle Rock is getting a super cool Odd Market happening every Monday from 5:30 to 9:30pm you can expect food trucks, pop up vendors, bowling and cocktails. Located at All Star Lanes and sponsored by LA Weekly we get the feeling this event will become a popular hang out in the community fast. The organizers of this event have previously created the Downtown Flea Market, Dodger Stadium Flea Market, Peddler on the Roof and Truckit Fest, so if you’ve been to any of those, that may give you an idea of what you’re in for here. Mind the weather on Monday though, as it may be raining still in the afternoon.

4. Get Free Pancakes at IHOP In Celebration Of International Pancake Day!

IHOP will be celebrating their 10th annual National Pancake Day by giving away one free short stack of buttermilk pancakes to every patron who visits that day. The offer is being provided in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, which provides funding for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States. IHOP’s goal this year is to raise $3.5 million for charity through this one-day event.

5. Free Night At Kidspace Children’s Museum

Free family nights at the Kidspace Children’s Museum happen’s every first Tuesday of the month from 4pm. to 8pm. The Pasadena museum is hosting a night of Irish Culture and dance. Guest will explore the history of St. Patricks Day, make stain glass shamrock, enjoy irish folk tails and more. For more information check out their events page.

6. Literary Death Match At Largo

Now in it’s ninth year co-creator Adrian Todd Zuniga hosts his popular match with a notable panel of judges director Jason Reitman and comedians Whitney Cummings and Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords will be critiquing finalists as they fight to the death to be crowned the winner. 7. Enjoy Kick Ass Comedy West Of The 405!

UNpopular opinion is a free show with pretty cool comedians Featuring, Dan St. Germain, Laurie Kilmartin, Dan O’Brien, Matt McCarthy, Mo Mandel and Soren Bowie. So come on down to Westside Comedy Theater and enjoy some laughs!

8. Election Day

Ok, so this isn’t actually a ‘thing to do’ but consider this a gentle civic reminder. Here’s how to find your polling place if you didn’t already have that information on lock down.

9. UCLA VS. USC Basketball At Pauley Pavilion  

Rivalry game, anyone? While the Trojans may just be playing for pride, the Bruins are right on the bubble of making it in to the NCAA Tournament so everyone win counts for them, and with a win against USC and a strong showing in the Pac 12 tourney they may just sneak in. 10. Dame Edna Bids Farewell

We mentioned it last week, but it’s worth mentioning again. Topping off her 50 years in show business Dame Edna is ready to dazzle audiences one last time in this side splitting finale. 11. Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio

The Hammer is now exhibiting British designer Thomas Heatherwick’s inventive design concepts ranging from installations, to fashion to architecture. Admission to Provocation’s is free.

12. The Night Alive At The Geffen Playhouse 

Winner of the 2014 New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive is now in Los Angeles! The play follows Tommy who finds that no good deed goes unpunished with a series of incidents unraveling before the audience’s eyes. McPherson is a Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee who is recognized for his poetic dialogue and rich storytelling. Get more information and discounted tickets via Goldstar.

13. The Craigslist Monologues

Reading missed connections on Craigslist alone is funny enough BUT Natalie Lander and Brittany Ross were able to take it to another level. They have gathered their actor friends (yes some are famous) in one room to dissect these lonely, sad and horrifically hilarious submissions.  Visit their official website for event and ticket information.

14. Showgirl Revue at the Historic El Cid

Odalisque is a dinner show that combines showgirls belly dancing, Bollywood, samba and more. The El Cid is located on Sunset Boulevard near sunset junction. For more information and discounted tickets check out Goldstar. 

15. Visit The Skirball Culture Center For Free

On Thursday’s The Skirball’s exhibitions are free to the public. Check out Noah’s Ark a interactive journey where you can climb on board the ark and check out the life sized animals made of up-cycle, repurposed materials!

16. The Toledo Show

Jazz, cabaret and one hell of a story unfolds here at The Toledo Show where the audience will get a glimpse of the seedy side of the city of angels and its fallen souls. The tickets are going fast so get ’em quick!

17. Hangout with Kim Gordon and Aimee Mann

If you are a Sonic Youth fan then you know who Kim Gordon is, join her for one night as she discusses her new book, Girl in a Band, in which she chronicles her life from childhood to being in Sonic Youth and beyond. The event will be moderated by musician Aimee Mann double win for fans of women in rock! Hosted by L!ve Talks at The Aero theater, more information can be found on their website about this event.

18. An Undatable Performance

What if, as a lark, a playwright wrote a bunch of fake online dating profiles for made-up people that no one would ever possibly want to date? What if, by some miracle, those profiles generated responses anyway? What if those responses were acted out by a group of talented actors in a live, staged performance? 19. The 4th Annual Wayne Federman International Film Festival Presents: Ghostbusters (hosted by Paul Scheer)

What better way to kick off your Friday night then to spend it with the hilarious Paul Scheer hosting a screening of Ghostbusters. The festival actually kicks off on Thursday, but this is our favorite scheduled showing of the week. Get more information and discounted tickets via Goldstar.

20. Catch A Double Feature At New Beverly Cinema

To celebrate the greatness of 90’s film the new Beverly Cinema is host several double features this month. Fight Club and The Matrix will be put on the same bill for Friday AND Saturday night at the New Beverly Cinema located on Beverly Boulevard. Check out tickets and showtimes here.

21. Norton Simon Museum Free Day

The first Friday of every month the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena is free from 5pm to 8pm No reservations are required and the parking is FREE. It doesn’t get any better than that! Pro tip: If you can catch the sun set in time do it outside in their garden. For more information visit their website.

22. Laugh Your Ass Off At The Hit Comedy Mash Up: Pulp Fiction Meets Shakespeare 

Set in Elizabethan England, this story follows a pair of hit men that go on an adventure…very much like a certain movie that made Quentin Tarantino pretty damn famous. This much anticipate revival has brought the original cast members back and will run for a limited time. Get more information and half price tickets to the event via Goldstar.

23. First Friday At The Natural History Museum 

Access The Natural History Museum after-hours, go on a guided tour, enjoy scientist led discussions, mingle at the DJ Lounge and rock out at the Concert Hall. This month notable performances include JMSN and KCRW’s Raul Campos. Get your tickets in advance they sell out before the show!

24. First Friday Freebie Night At The Pasadena Museum Of California Art

Take advantage of First Fridays at The Pasadena Museum of California Art. Starting at noon and ending at 5pm Be sure to check out LA native Kenny Scharf’s exhibition his pop art aesthetic resonates the 90’s New York art scenes in which he was a part of with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

25 First Friday at Bixby Knolls

An artwalk, dining and shopping experience where participating businesses in the Long Beach neighborhood of Bixby Knolls businesses unite to promote local artists and musicians through extended operating hours. Fun for all-ages… and free! 630pm-930pm this Friday.
