The Benson Movie Interruption – M > What’s better than seeing a terrible/awesome movie with your friends and making fun of it while you watch it? How about live commentary from some of entertainment’s funniest movie lovers. This Tuesday at Dynasty Typewriter, Doug Benson hosts a “your choice” version of his Movie Interrupted series with special guests including Chris Sullivan, Lamorne Morris, Martha Kelly. Attendees are invited to bring in a Blue Ray / DVD of their choice, and the audience will vote on what to watch before the show begins. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 the day-of.More info here.
Moonlight Movies on the Beach – FA TP > This Tuesday, Long Beach’s signature beachside summer cinema series continues with a screening of The Breakfast Club at Granada Beach. Movies starts around sunset (8 to 8:30 p.m.). Free to attend, and parking is free after 6 p.m., though spots are limited. More info here.
City of San Gabriel 30th annual National Night Out – FA > On Tuesday, San Gabriel’s 30th annual National Night Out turns the historic Mission District into a block party with live music, food and games all in an effort to promote public safety. More info here.
Southern California in Kodachrome at The Getty – FA > American pop culture humorist (and Kodachrome slide collector) Charles Phoenix stops by The Getty this Wednesday for a presentation on SoCal in the 1950s and 60s. If mid-century is your preferred vibe, you’l love it. Free to attend with registration. Starts at 7 p.m. More info here.
Shakespeare in the Park – FA > The Independent Shakespeare Co. is once again bringing a summer of the Bard to Griffith Park, but unlike in past years, the 2024 season will focus on a single production. From July 10 to September 1, catch Wednesday-through-Sunday performances of As You Like It at ISC’s familiar space near the Old Zoo. The main show starts at 7 p.m., and you can catch a pre-show, immersive prologue at 6 p.m. Free to attend, but donations heartily encouraged. More info here.
First Wednesday Lecture at The AoP -> Every first Wednesday evening of the month, the Aquarium of the Pacific hosts an evening guest lecture and cocktail reception at the Pacific Visions Theater. For August 7, they’ll discuss the future of seafood, the over consumption problem we are facing and how innovation can play a key role in finding solutions. Admission is $5 advance online and $10 the day of the event at the door. More info here.
“Summer Together” AAPI Third-Space Experience -> Yuzu and Golden Guide are hosting “Summer Together,” a series of nostalgic events designed especially for the Asian American community throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Over three days (this Thursday to Saturday), the pop-up activities include a Boba Date at Bearology in Temple City, a mini-photo session at Portrait Space in Old Pasadena, and a Board Game Social at Blossom Market Hall in San Gabriel. Most events are free to attend excluding the photo session. Each stop will have its own unique activations including discounts, swag and crafts. More info here.
JazzPOP at Hammer Museum – FA > The Hammer’s JazzPOP series continues its 17th season this Thursday with performance by the Beth Schenck Quintet. Free to attend. Concerts kicks off at 8 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served. More info here.
Downtown Downey Night Market: Hello Kitty Baseball Night – FA > This Thursday’s edition of the Downtown Downey Night Market includes the usual assortment of 70+ local craft vendors and 8+ food trucks and food vendors, plus special photo ops (RSVP required) with Hello Kitty & Friends characters. Sunset Concerts at the Skirball – FA > The Skirball Cultural Center’s annual Sunset Concert series continues this Thursday with indie-rock artist Vagabon. All concerts include complimentary gallery access, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Free walk-up tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is available from $15-$20. Sizzling Summer Nights at The Autry -> Every Thursday in August, The Autry museum hosts some of L.A.’s best salsa and Latin fusion bands with free salsa lessons, access to the museum galleries and a separate children’s dance floor. Admission cost $25 per person. More info here.
Descanso Gardens Summer Music and Dance Series – TP > Descanso Gardens summer music and dance series continues this Thursday with an evening of samba from the Brazilian Heart Experience. The 45-minute session engages younger audiences and families with a blend of dance, song, stories and visual art. Access to the event is included with admission to the garden. Sunset Swim at Annenberg Community Beach House -> This Friday, take a swim in the historic pool of the former oceanfront estate of actress Marion Davies. Dance DTLA at The Music Center – M FA > The Music Center’s Dance DTLA hosts an evening of Hip Hop this Friday, with instructors will be on hand to teach guests easy-to-follow steps, allowing everyone to get into the groove right from the jump. Friday Night Wine Tastings at Barnsdall Park – M > After a five-year hiatus, Friday night wine tasting events are back at the Barnsdall Art Park West Lawn. A $45 ticket gets you a flight of wine curated by Silverlake Wine, plus access to a rotation of food trucks, all supported by tunes from local DJs and sweet sunset views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Observatory. Jazz at LACMA – FA > The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Friday Night Jazz series is back for a season of free weekly concerts at Smidt Welcome Plaza through November. This week: a performance by Clayton Cameron Sextet. Remember that LACMA is free to visit for L.A. County Residents (with I.D.) on weekdays after 3 p.m. Seating is first come, first serve. Zoo Friday Nights -> This Friday, the L.A. Zoo continues their summer series of weekly after-hours events, offering access the zoo grounds at the sunset hour while experiencing carousel rides, food delicious bites for purchase, beverages, DJ’d music, and a family dance party. Yacht Club Pop-Up in Marina del Rey -> On Thursday, August 8, Denver’s Yacht Club bar will visit Cast & Plow inside The Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey for an evening of cocktails and bites. Yacht Club’s co-owners Mary Allison Wright and McLain Hedges will offer signature drinks, including their Hidden Valley Ranch Water made with Patrón Silver Tequila, fino sherry, dill, mint, lemon, black pepper, buttermilk, and Perrier. Known for their hot dog-focused food program, Yacht Club will serve their signature Caviar Dog (caviar, crème fraiche, chives, chips), alongside other bites from Cast & Plow’s culinary team. Lucia Palm and Little Ripper Wine & Bites Tasting Event -> Little Ripper is teaming up with TikTok-famous sommelier Lucia Palm on Tuesday for an interactive wine tasting experience featuring five curated wines, each paired with artisanal bites from Little Ripper. Teddy’s Mixology Masters Bartender Series -> This week, The Hollywood Roosevelt launches an international cocktail series at Teddy’s, showcasing award-winning bars from the 2023 World’s 50 Best Bars List. The series begins Thursday and Friday with Milan’s 1930 Cocktail Bar. Typically, access to its Italy location requires a personal connection within the Farmily Group, but locals and guests of The Hollywood Roosevelt will have exclusive access to this mixology experience for two evenings. Guests will enjoy signature drinks, including mocktails, and internationally influenced bites featuring Southern California ingredients. 1930 Cocktail Bar mixologists Daniele Trombelli and Benjamin Fabio Cavagna will be present.
