October is on deck, and that means Halloween-themed activities are kicking into high gear. But there is still lots on offer is if you’re not so into the scary stuff.

From September 30 to October 4 in Los Angeles you’ll find Free Metro rides for California Clean Air Day, a VP Debate screening at The Hammer, MONSTER PARTY in DTLA, Boney Island at NHM, Carved at Descanso Gardens, MASQ! at the Mountain View Mausoleum, the San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest, and much more. VP Debate Live Screening at The HammerFA > As the political season enters the stretch run, we’re getting out final national debate this Tuesday as the Vice Presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance square off on CBS. The Hammer will be hosting a live viewing of the debate, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the debate to air at 6 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Benson Movie InterruptionM > What’s better than seeing a terrible/awesome movie with your friends and making fun of it while you watch it? How about live commentary from some of entertainment’s funniest movie lovers. This Tuesday at Dynasty Typewriter, Doug Benson hosts a “your choice” version of his Movie Interrupted series with special guests including Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Blaine Capatch. Attendees are invited to bring in a Blue Ray / DVD of their choice, and the audience will vote on what to watch before the show begins. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7. Metro Free Ride DayM FA > To Celebrate California Clean Air Day this Wednesday, L.A. Metro is offering free rides on all Metro bus, rail and bike services for the entire day. That means turnstiles at rail stations will be unlatched, and riders will be free to board buses with no need for a TAP card. Plus, you can get free Metro Micro rides using the code CleanAir24 for any ride that day. More info here.

Divorced Divas at The CrowM > Is there life after divorce? Only if you’re willing to laugh at yourself! This Wednesday at The Crow, a group of comedians tackle the subject of marital dissolution through a night of laughter and learning. Think of it as part support group, part Q&A (and all funny). The lineup includes Jamie Shriner, Chrissa Sparkles, Madison Shepard, and Ismael Loutfi. Tickets are $20. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. More info here.

Ballots and Beer at ACBM FA TP > With with the state and national election five weeks away, the question on lots of minds is… what are we voting for (besides president that is)? This Wednesday, swing over to Angel City Brewery, have a seat, grab a brew, and get familiar with the issues as Loraine Lundquist from the League of Women Voters guides you through what’s on this November’s ballot. Event runs 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Crossing Over at Cal Tech FA > The California Institute of Technology entry into the PST ART wave is Crossing Over, a new exhibition that bridges science and art using over 250 objects pulled from the Caltech Archives along with contemporary artworks and installations. The art is spread over six distinct spaces within the campus, each offering a unique take on themes that range from light and geometry to time and scale. Radical Imagination: Queer Stories through Sci-Fi StorytellingM FA TP > This Thursday, the USC Fisher Museum hosts science-fiction authors Ryka Aoki, Micaiah Johnson, and Brent Lambert for an evening of readings and a conversations revolving around the science fiction and its intersection with queer narratives, presented in conjunction with the museum’s PST-related exhibition, Sexual Science and the Imagi-Nation. The event is free to attend and starts at 6 p.m. More info here.

MONSTER PARTY: A Queer Halloween Immersive Show -> Matt Dorado, heretofore creator of the immersive nightlife series Drunken Devil, has put together a special two-night engagement at Wonzimer Gallery in DTLA this Thursday and Friday. MONSTER PARTY is an interactive Hollywood soiree set against the backdrop of McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare. Guests will mingle with peculiar party guests and sip on cocktails as a twisted narrative unfolds, taking them on a journey to hell and back (so they say). Tickets are $85 and that includes two drinks. Starts at 7:30 p.m. both nights. More info here.

Boney Island at the Natural History Museum M TP > Starting this Thursday, The Nature Gardens of Natural History Museum Los Angeles bring back Boney Island for the Halloween season. Expect an array of glowing installations, spooky skeletons, and shadow puppetry interlaced with artistic performances, and real fossils from the museum’s collection. Plus, this year the attraction is folding in local food trucks and vendors, along with bar service guests who are 21+. Boney Island runs on select days throughout the month of October. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids 3-12. More info here.

Carved at Descanso Gardens -> Descanso Gardens’ family-friendly Carved returns starting this Friday with a pumpkin wonderland featuring a new route, hundreds of carved pumpkins and kid-friendly activities. Tickets start at $35-$45 for non-members. Runs nightly through October 30. Get more info here.

The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor -> After a four-year hiatus, Dark Harbor is back at the iconic Queen Mary with terrifying characters, haunted mazes, live entertainment, ghostly experiences, sinister eats and secret speakeasies hidden inside and around Dark Harbor’s mazes and attractions. Tickets start at $39.99. The experience runs on select dates from September 20 through November 2, including this Friday to Sunday. More info here.

San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest -> On Friday, The Dumpling and Beer Fest returns to the Mission District of San Gabriel for fall, 2024. Expect a local selection of dumpling food booths, food trucks, a craft beer garden, kids’ arts & crafts, and live entertainment. GA tickets are $44.52 (including fees). Runs 6 to 10 p.m. 21+ only. Urban Death at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre -> Zombie Joe’s annual tradition of Urban Death is back with a brand new series of terrifying vignettes, bookended by walks through a creepy maze. The scares continue this Friday and Saturday with shows at 7 p.m. 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10:45 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $23 online, or it’s $28 at door. Get more info here.

MASQ! – > Starting this Friday, Mountain View Mausoleum transforms into a Venice Carnevale on the evening of a masked ball where a vengeful phantom appears, seeking justice. Presented by the Downtown Repertory Theater Company, known for sold out experience Fangs! and Witch!, this years production MASQ! will include unique individual experiences as you meet the people of La Serenissima and traverse a world of haunted mansions and an abandoned church. Tito’s Fiesta Mexicana at Tito’s Tacos -> This Friday, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Tito’s Tacos are teaming up to celebrate National Vodka Day and National Taco Day (conveniently happening on the same day of the year). Coupled with the food and drink will be entertainment by a range of artist from music to a magician and comedy Eric Schwartz aka “Smooth-E.” Proceeds will go on to benefit The Culver City Cultural Affairs Foundation. Tickets cost $35 for food and alcohol, $20 for those interested in food only. More info here.

Sushi by Scratch Omakase Pop-Up at SLS Beverly Hills -> Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee are bringing their renowned Sushi by Scratch omakase to the SLS Beverly Hills for an exclusive 90-day pop-up starting October 2. The pop-up will be held in the hotel’s secret “white room,” which will be transformed into a cozy, intimate space, dimly lit with a central counter where three sushi chefs will serve a 17-course omakase to just 10 guests per seating.

Your dining experience begins with a complimentary welcome cocktail and canapé before the sushi masters guide you through an inventive nigiri menu. The fish is flown in from Tokyo’s famous Toyosu Fish Market, featuring both new dishes and signature favorites. Standout items include Hamachi with sweet corn pudding and sourdough breadcrumbs, aged Bluefin Tuna with house-made soy sauce and fresh wasabi, and Unagi fried in bone marrow fat with a rich combination of poblano yuzu kosho, soy sauce, ponzu, lemon, and sea salt. For dessert, you’ll indulge in Chef Margarita’s Matcha Bon Bon with makrut lime, white chocolate, and shortbread, paired with Hot Green Tea infused with umeshu plum wine, smoked lavender honey, and yuzu.

The meal is elevated by a beverage program curated by Sake Sommelier Gavin Humes, offering a refined selection of Japanese sake and whisky. Guests can also choose from three beverage pairings, ranging from $105 to $125. The omakase experience is priced at $185 per person. Reservations can be made via Tock, with seatings available Wednesday through Sunday at 5 p.m., 7:15 p.m., and 9:30 p.m.
