Make Metro Part of Your Weekend
LUMINEX 3.0: Landscape Frequencies – FA > The outdoor art experience LUMINEX returns for its third year this Saturday, transforming downtown Los Angeles into a vibrant outdoor gallery for one night only. Buildings in DTLA’s South Park District will become giant canvases, showcasing the work of eight cutting-edge multimedia artists, including JOJO ABOT, Refik Anadol, Alice Bucknell, Nao Bustamante, Petra Cortright, Marc Horowitz, Carole Kim, and Sarah Rara, with special installations by Los Angeles Video Artists (LAVA). MONSTER PARTY: A Queer Halloween Immersive Show -> Matt Dorado, heretofore creator of the immersive nightlife series Drunken Devil, has put together a special two-night engagement at Wonzimer Gallery in DTLA this Thursday and Friday. MONSTER PARTY is an interactive Hollywood soiree set against the backdrop of McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare. Guests will mingle with peculiar party guests and sip on cocktails as a twisted narrative unfolds, taking them on a journey to hell and back (so they say). Boney Island at the Natural History Museum – M TP > Starting this Thursday, The Nature Gardens of Natural History Museum Los Angeles bring back Boney Island for the Halloween season. Expect an array of glowing installations, spooky skeletons, and shadow puppetry interlaced with artistic performances, and real fossils from the museum’s collection. Plus, this year the attraction is folding in local food trucks and vendors, along with bar service guests who are 21+. Boney Island runs on select days throughout the month of October. Carved at Descanso Gardens -> Descanso Gardens’ family-friendly Carved returns starting this Friday with a pumpkin wonderland featuring a new route, hundreds of carved pumpkins and kid-friendly activities. The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor -> After a four-year hiatus, Dark Harbor is back at the iconic Queen Mary with terrifying characters, haunted mazes, live entertainment, ghostly experiences, sinister eats and secret speakeasies hidden inside and around Dark Harbor’s mazes and attractions. Tickets start at $39.99. The experience runs on select dates from September 20 through November 2, including this Friday to Sunday. More info here.
San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest -> On Friday, The Dumpling and Beer Fest returns to the Mission District of San Gabriel for fall, 2024. Expect a local selection of dumpling food booths, food trucks, a craft beer garden, kids’ arts & crafts, and live entertainment. GA tickets are $44.52 (including fees). Runs 6 to 10 p.m. 21+ only. Urban Death at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre -> Zombie Joe’s annual tradition of Urban Death is back with a brand new series of terrifying vignettes, bookended by walks through a creepy maze. The scares continue this Friday and Saturday with shows at 7 p.m. 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10:45 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $23 online, or it’s $28 at door. Get more info here.
MASQ! – > Starting this Friday, Mountain View Mausoleum transforms into a Venice Carnevale on the evening of a masked ball where a vengeful phantom appears, seeking justice. Presented by the Downtown Repertory Theater Company, known for sold out experience Fangs! and Witch!, this years production MASQ! will include unique individual experiences as you meet the people of La Serenissima and traverse a world of haunted mansions and an abandoned church. Tito’s Fiesta Mexicana at Tito’s Tacos -> This Friday, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Tito’s Tacos are teaming up to celebrate National Vodka Day and National Taco Day (conveniently happening on the same day of the year). Coupled with the food and drink will be entertainment by a range of artist from music to a magician and comedy Eric Schwartz aka “Smooth-E.” Proceeds will go on to benefit The Culver City Cultural Affairs Foundation. Japan Family Day > One of the largest Japanese Family Festivals in SoCal, Japan Family Day brings two days (Saturday and Sunday) of Japanese culture, entertainment, and food to Santa Anita Park. Fun for the entire family the festival runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both dates, and attendees can also catch the Tokyo City Cup at the race track on Sunday. Tickets cost $10. More info here.
ChainFEST – > On Saturday, ChainFEST brings a gourmet food festival featuring chef-driven interpretations of iconic chain restaurant dishes to Skylight ROW DTLA. Guests will have the opportunity to savor elevated versions of classic items from beloved restaurants like White Castle, Red Lobster, and a revived Koo Koo Roo, along with exciting new creations from various cherished chains, all presented in immersive restaurant build-outs. Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch – > Starting this Saturday, Culver City’s favorite pumpkin village is back offering plenty of family fun, including photo ops in front of giant pumpkin installations, a straw maze, a super slide, petting zoo, giant rocking horses, and pumpkin decorating sessions. LA Card Show – FA > If collecting trading cards is your passion, stop by Bullpen Sports HQ in El Segundo this Saturday for the first ever LA Card Show. They’re hosting 30+ vendor tables and the entertainment includes live DJs, brand activations, limited edition merch, basketball shootouts, giveaways, and more. It’s all free to attend! What Water Wants Opening at Clockshop – FA TP > This Saturday, Clockshop hosts an free opening celebration for artist Rosten Woo’s binaural audio tour What Water Wants, presented as part of the PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative. The late afternoon affair at Lewis MacAdams Park will include hands-on workshops with artist Misa Chhan and mycologist Danielle Stevenson, special educational activities with California State Parks and The Nature Conservancy, tunes by DJ Muezette, and timed tours of the new experience. Over-the-ear headsets will be provided for the tours, but timed slots will be offered on a first-come, first-reserved basis. The event runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m. More info here.
Culver City Art Walk and Roll Festival – M FA TP > This Saturday, a four-block stretch of Washington Blvd will close to traffic for the day-long Culver City Art Walk and Roll Festival. Expect a slew of gallery visits, artists, two stages of live music, wine and beer gardens, a kids zone, interactive art experiences, and more. Free and open to the public. The Cute & Creepy Art Show – M FA > The Cute and Creepy art show brings the works of 100+ (mostly) local artists together for a collection of spooky, cute, adorable, and odd creations, all showcased at the The Hive Gallery & Studios in DTLA. FoLAR’s 34th Annual Great L.A. River Cleanup – FA > Want to roll up your sleeves and help beautify L.A. this weekened? Friends of the Los Angeles River celebrates fall with a foursome of volunteer events this Saturday where guests will gather to collect trash and tidy up at sites along the Los Angeles River including Bull Creek, North Atwater Park, Compton Creek, and Willow St. Bridge in Long Beach. The Oddities Flea Market – > The Oddities Flea Market takes over the Avalon this Saturday with a day of off-beat shopping where you’ll find three floors of one-of-a-kind curiosities from over 70 vendors. Runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets range $31.05 to $60.10. More info here.
45th Annual Montrose Oktoberfest -> The 45th annual Montrose Oktoberfest celebration takes over Honolulu Ave this Saturday with multiple stages of live music, speciality beers, food for purchase from Schreiner’s Sausages, games, rides, contests and more. Dogtoberfest at South Coast Botanic Garden -> South Coast Botanic Garden hosts Dogtoberfest every Saturday and Sunday in October, inviting guests to bring their dogs for a fun day out. Explore a “pup crawl” with four stations offering free beer tastings (full beers for purchase), plus a Dance Pawty, Doggy Marketplace, obstacle course, and a self-guided Bark Walk showcasing the garden’s trees. Bavarian-inspired food and beer will be available for purchase. Tickets are $15 per adult and $5 per dog. More info here.
Roller Jam Skate Through the Eras in Venice – FA > To mark the premiere of Max and Magnolia Networks’ latest original series, Roller Jam, you can catch up a pop-up skating experience under the Venice Sign this Sunday. The activation includes era-specific soundtracks to skate to plus complimentary skate rentals, meet-and-greets with the show’s cast, and special merch. Runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Autry of the American West Annual Block Party -> On Sunday, celebrate the Autry Museum of the American West’s 36th-anniversary with a carnival with bounce houses, a Ferris Wheel, plus access to museum exhibits like PST ART: Art & Science Collide. Enjoy plein air painting, an interactive horse experience with Urban Saddles, a meet-and-greet with PBS’ Curious George, a music workshop, fry bread for sale, and a Native Voices performance. One Colorado Fall Festival – M FA > Old Pasadena’s One Colorado celebrates the fall season this Sunday with afternoon of live music, fall treats, games, and a beer garden, all free to attend. Runs 1 to 4 p.m. More info here.
Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome -> Mount Wilson Observatory continues its 2024 season of classical/jazz concerts this Sunday hosted inside the historic 100-inch telescope dome, where the acoustics are said to be some of the finest in the world. There will be two musical performances, one at 3 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m. Tickets are $60. More info here

Crème Brûlée Shaved Ice Pop Up -> This Saturday, October 5, Suehiro DTLA will host a special event celebrating the artistry of Japanese shaved ice, known as Kakigori. The pop-up features Kuramoto ice and guest chef Sebastian Kawamata, owner of a renowned Kakigori shop originally from Tokyo, now based in Melbourne. Sebastian will showcase his signature crème brûlée shaved ice, a fusion of creamy custard and caramelized sugar, elevated by the pure, delicate texture of Kuramoto ice. To complement the dessert, Tomoko Imade Dyen will present a curated selection of Japanese teas, offering the perfect balance to the sweetness. Tickets are available on Tock for $35 per Kakigori, with time slots every 30 minutes from noon to 5:30 p.m. If you can’t make it on Saturday, Kawamata will also appear on Sunday at 626 Ice Cream in Arcadia, offering an exclusive Japanese Rare Cheesecake Kakigori for $25. Frogtown Brewery Eight Year Anniversary -> The Frogtown Brewery is celebrating its eighth anniversary with a week packed full of events. It all kicks off on Thursday, October 3, with a Beer & Donut Flight, pairing four craft beers with donuts from Donut Friend. The flight includes their special anniversary release, Jo Jo’s Jam, a Hazy IPA inspired by local farmers market jams. On Friday, October 4, the brewery throws an Oktoberfest bash featuring their Märzen Lager, stein sales, and a German-inspired menu from Overall BBQ. Expect live music by Fiddle Squad and a stein-holding contest in the beer garden. Saturday, October 5, brings a special limited release of their World Beer Cup award-winning Prince George, a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter with Madagascar Vanilla Bean. They’ll also unveil an exclusive blueberry maple pancake variant. The celebration wraps up on Sunday, October 6, with a Beer & Junk Food Flight. Launch of Sunday Supper at Openaire -> Starting this week, Openaire, the Koreatown rooftop restaurant at The LINE Hotel, is introducing a weekly Sunday Supper. The family-style menu will showcase signature dishes such as prime cuts of roast and whole grilled branzino, complemented by a selection of starters and desserts. Priced at $55 per person (with a two-person minimum per table), the experience also offers an optional $45 wine bottle pairing to complete the meal. More info here.
Venice Beach Wine Club Anniversary Party -> Venice Beach Wine Club is celebrating its two-year anniversary with a large-scale event at The Rose in Venice this Friday, honoring the community they’ve built over the past two years. The social club for wine lovers invites the public to join and enjoy a wide selection of wines from Baire Wines, Una Lou, Le Chill, Alma Fria, Lone Madrone, Hollow Wines, and Reeve Wines.
