Make Metro Part of Your Weekend
Colburn School’s Annual Open House – M FA > On Saturday, explore all the Colburn School has to offer through a day-long, family-friendly event featuring free classes, free dance and musical performances, faculty meet-and-greets, an instrument petting zoo, plus face painting, games, prizes and more. The Open House is free to attend, but keep in mind registration is required for the open classes. Runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More info here.

Disney ’80s-’90s Celebration in Concert -> This Friday and Saturday, at the Hollywood Bowl, catch back-to-back evenings of nostalgic celebration as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra joins a slew of special guest singers to perform hits from Disney’s most iconic animated films of the 80’s and 90’s. The lineup features songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Hocus Pocus, Newsies, A Goofy Movie and more. The cast includes Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel), Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy and Pluto), Susan Egan, Corbin Bleu, Krysta Roriguez, and many more. Concert starts at 8 p.m. both nights. RuPaul’s DragCon -> RuPaul’s DragCon brings two days of all things drag to the L.A. Convention Center this Friday and Saturday. Expect an assortment of panel events, shopping, performances plus plenty of face time from the stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Single day tickets range from $25 to $150. More info here.
Summer Concerts at The Broad – M > This Friday and Saturday, The Broad hosts two nights of outdoor concerts at East West Bank Plaza. Tickets give guests access to the special exhibition Mickalene Thomas: All About Love and the third-floor gallery during the after hours event. GA cost $50 and VIP $75. More info here.
Dance DTLA at The Music Center – M FA > The Music Center’s Dance DTLA hosts an evening of Colombian Cumbia this Friday, with instructors will be on hand to teach guests easy-to-follow steps, allowing everyone to get into the groove right from the jump. Salsa Night at Ivy Station – M FA > This Friday, hop over to Ivy Station in Culver City for an evening of salsa. Dance instructor Pepe Gonzalez teaches an intro salsa lesson from 6:30 to 7 p.m., then guests can use what they’ve learned during a live set by Fermin Fusion Salsa from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Free. Outdoors. Shakespeare in the Park – FA > The Independent Shakespeare Co. is once again bringing a summer of the Bard to Griffith Park, but unlike in past years, the 2024 season will focus on a single production. From July 10 to September 1, catch Wednesday-through-Sunday performances of As You Like It at ISC’s familiar space near the Old Zoo. The main show starts at 7 p.m., and you can catch a pre-show, immersive prologue at 6 p.m. Free to attend, but donations heartily encouraged. More info here.
SheLA Summer Theater Festival -> The SheLA Summer Theater Festival comes to the Zephyr Theater July 16-21, showcasing new, original, creative works by gender-marginalized playwrights and composers in Los Angeles. Movies at The Steps – FA > Watch family friendly movies every Friday night at the Culver City Steps. Screenings start at 8:30 p.m. it’s free to attend and complimentary popcorn will be provided. This week they’ll screen Honey I Shrunk The Kids. More info here.
Shakespeare By the Sea – FA > The 27th anniversary season of Shakespeare By the Sea continues this weekend at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach with a Friday performance of Henry IV . All shows are free to attend, but donations are gladly accepted. Performances run at locations throughout L.A. and Orange County through Aug. 3. More info here.
Friday Night Wine Tastings at Barnsdall Park – M > After a five-year hiatus, Friday night wine tasting events are back at the Barnsdall Art Park West Lawn. A $45 ticket gets you a flight of wine curated by Silverlake Wine, plus access to a rotation of food trucks, all supported by tunes from local DJs and sweet sunset views of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Observatory. Jazz at LACMA – FA > The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Friday Night Jazz series is back for a season of free weekly concerts at Smidt Welcome Plaza through November. This week: a performance by Marvin “Smitty” Smith Septet. Remember that LACMA is free to visit for L.A. County Residents (with I.D.) on weekdays after 3 p.m. Seating is first come, first serve. Off the 405 – FA > The Getty’s annual after-hours concerts series offers five dates for the summer of 2024. Off the 405 continues this Saturday with a performance by Helado Negro. You’ll need to pre-register for free to attend, and remember that parking is $10 after 6 p.m. on Saturdays. More info here.
Second Annual Afro-Latino Culture Fest at LA Plaza – M FA > The second annual Afro-Latino Culture Fest returns to LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes this Saturday celebrating the rich tradition of Afro-Latino(a)(x) and Caribbean cultures with an array of food vendors, Caribbean inspired cocktails, a beer garden, special vendors, community resources, and kid-friendly activities. KCRW Summer Nights at Union Station – M FA TP > KCRW’s signature summer event series swing over to Union Station this Saturday, offering an evening of DJ sets from KCRW DJs Jeremy Sole and Chris Douridas. Free to attend. Doors open at 6 p.m. More info here.

Divercity Concerts at Pershing Square – M FA > This annual free concert series in the heart of DTLA is back with a pair of events this weekend. On Saturday, catch an oldies concert featuring The Stylistics, The Drifters, and The Persuaders. Then on Sunday, it’s an afternoon of R&B featuring Montell Jordan, SHAI, Ruff Endz, and. Blaque. Taco Day at Central Library – M FA TP > The latest LA Made program at Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium is a vibrant discussion among local taqueros who will articulate the challenges facing restaurants in the post-Covid economy, as well as their approach to creating food that stands out from the crowd. This Sunday’s “Taco Day” features L.A. Taco editor-in-chief Javier Cabral moderating a guest lineup that includes Chuy Cervantes, chef de cuisine of Damian/Ditroit, Fátima Juárez, co-owner of the soon to be opened Komal, and Victor Villa, owner of Villa’s Tacos. Poolside Cinema -> Every Sunday the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica hosts film screenings poolside. Tickets cost $45 a person and includes popcorn, and a $45 food credit. This week they’ll screen Aquamarine. More info here.

Happy Hour at Neighborhood Winery -> Sip, savor, and save at Neighborhood Winery‘s new happy hour. Nestled in the heart of the Arts District, this natural wine bar now offers $7 glasses from 4pm to 6pm, Tuesday through Friday. During this time, guests can pair their vino with deli inspired eats at about half the price. We’re pretty sure this is the only place in town to get a $8 pastrami sandwich and $6 latkes with an excellent glass of wine.
Hokey Pokey’s Opening in Culver City -> Hokey Pokey, the New Zealand-style soft serve sensation, opens its second spot in Los Angeles at Westfield Culver City Mall. To celebrate, they’re offering their signature Hokey Pokey flavor—packed with honeycomb toffee goodness—for just $1 all day. Tiki Rooftop Party at The Aster -> On Friday, July 19, from 6 p.m. to midnight, The Aster in Hollywood is throwing a Tiki Rooftop Party teaming up with The Alchemists—creators of Stowaway Tiki Bar, The Lost Inferno, and Belly of the Beast. This event promises tiki-inspired specialty cocktails and a luau menu crafted by Chef Marcel Vigneron and Weiser Family Farms.
